Personally, I don't think so.
I say as long as the car has either a, cult following, has done something to advance cars in time, has history or is famous in someway by any means, it can be a classic. It doesn't need to be special, but now that I think of it, maybe being "special" is in the eye of the beholder. It depends on what YOU as a person thinks is special. Take the Toyota Tercel for example:
Before breaking bad, I don't think many people knew or cared of it's existence; hell, I didn't start watching it until after it had ended. I've got a friend with a blue Tercel just like the one in the picture, that he drives from New York to Michigan every year to go to college, that and me watching BB has made it a special car to me, because it's something not many people have or daily drive on very long commutes even.
So it seems this debate has changed a bit as I typed this. Oppo, what do you think defines a car as "classic" or even a future classic, and why? Discuss!

64 1/2 65 mustangs. Broke all sorts of sales records, and they are classics. They wouldn't be special in 1970 but are classics now.
I think a old car cared for is a classic, it could be a trecel or a Aztec or a mini van, if it's been looked after it's a classic. (Classic does not equal cool tho)

Lets take the 57 chevy for example.
What makes it a classic?
1 so many people had them as their first cars.
2 it is beautiful.
3 so many people have fond memories with them.
4 almost everyone knows what it is.
5 it has a cult following
6 it is a car almoat anyone can love.
7 All of this make it SPECIAL
Conclusion- Classic car must be special.

Isn't a classic car defined as 30 years old or more or something. I think classic is the wrong word here.

It is a classic. It just will never be a valuable one.

Being a classic and special are two different things. A car can be a classic based on your 1-6, but it's only special if you think it's special to you and you alone. It's your opinion of the matter!

What would you say then? Do you think a car needs to be special to be a classic?

All cars become classics, desirability is a completly different thing. Mustang II ara classic but not very high on the deairabiltiy chart. Well mayber the front end, but not the complete car. Gremlins, Pacers, Corvairs, all classics but a little I loved. Now all 70s throwaway garbage is classics but its all about desire. so in a way the car has to be special to be recognized.

No. I think a car needs to be special to be collectable or sought after. Classic to me just means old. Maybe the picture of the current and older Mustang is confusing me here.

I guess the beauty is in the eye of the beholder. It is the owner's opinion on why it is classic and if it is special.

no, not my thing. But to the right person it is. Nostalgia is what keeps old cars that don't have much value on the road.

I think of it this way. Classics are, in general, special. They tend to be either first ofs or pinnacles of a period's design paradigms. Other cars are antiques. Antiques can be special to an individual here or there and are cool in their own way, but they don't rise to the level of classics in my mind.

The way I see it, a car being special is whether or not it's very sought after or collectible, a '64 1/2 Mustang, 60s 911, '58 Vette are collectible and therefore, very special.
Classic I think has to do with whether or not the car is nostalgic or memorable. All of the cars I listed are in that case are classic. So some cars can be classic, and or special, it just depends on the car and the person's perception of it.

It has to be special to at least one person to be a classic.
May be memory, a feature, its history or just its looks. It may appeal only to you. I think that's what a classic is about. It has that appeal... many cars have an appeal, but some have more than others and that makes them special. Which makes them a classic, even if it's just for you.
