Changed the brakes on my sister's Mazda 3 and cut the shit out of my hand. When the caliper bracket bolt broke loose my thumb went into the dust cover.
Always use protection. Here it is two days later. Probably should have got a stitch or two...

owwwwwwch!!! Protection indeed! This is the kind of shit that made me start wearing gloves. A good set of mechanics gloves is one of those purchases you never regret.

Screw stitches. You just need some paper towels and duct tape!
But yeah, that sucks man. I hate dust covers for that reason. It seems there is some jackass somewhere in the "dust cover" factory sharpening the edges before sending them off to be installed.

Damn, son, that looks painful! Time to invest in some Mechanix gloves! My hands are already fucked up enough, but my gloves have saved me countless more scars.

I did that when I cut two fingers on my left hand changing the exhaust on the Alfa.
It was late November so cold as fuck and raining, and my exhaust rusted through and fell off. I got most of it out working parked up in the road, but the joint closest to the rusty bit was putting up a real fight.
I bought a set of mole grips (didn't have any as I was at university) which came in a vacuum-packed package. Clever me, I decided to use a big ol' hunting knife to cut it open with numb hands.
That let go suddenly and the knife cut straight through the side of the pad on my LH ring finger, and lodged itself against the bone in my little finger.
Swore a bit, wrapped it in toilet roll and tape and continued with my work. That soaked through pretty quickly, so I changed the 'bandage' for another and finished the job.
Inside, cup of tea and some half-decent bandages.
Went to work in the evening (worked as a home carer at the time), came back and showed it to my housemates who finally persuaded me to go to A+E.
Couple of stitches and I was on my way :)
I've laways been stupid when it comes to that sort of thing :S worked alright though

I've got a 5/8" long gash on the heel of my left hand from bashing it on rusty '63 Ford bodywork last night. Bled about this much, but not as deep.
Not even close to the permanent scar I should have had stitched (but didn't) on my right wrist. Still got a lump of keyloid tissue an inch long from tearing it on a Land Rover chassis a year ago.

Gas tank outrigger on the side of a LR SII chassis a year ago ripped into my wrist damn deep - patched it up with duct tape and kept working. A year later, I've still got a raised scar an inch long.

That first pic is after I already cleaned it up once and the bandage came off while changing out the other side. It was a solid 1' diameter pool of blood when I got done changing the offending pad out.

I went with the paper towel and duct tape route, but it kept bleeding through. Put the butterfly on, but now two days later it's still open. I'm just going to keep butterflying it until it closes.

I'm not sure quite how much I bled total - the depicted is about how much collected on the door threshold. A good bit more ended up on the dirt, in the puddle in the dirt, on the flashlight, and possibly the floorboards (what was left of them).

I cut myself bad with a fixed blade knife a few years ago. I was on vacation and heard something at the door of our rental. I had a few drinks and pulkled the knife out of the sheath wrong, running the serrated portion over my thumb. I could see my tendon. Butterflied it up and it ended up healing in about four days. It didn't hurt, but the site of it almost make me throw up.

It was sharp enough that it really didn't hurt. I went and got some gloves as soon as I finished up. Did my axles yesterday using said gloves. Much safer.

Cars love blood, it makes them stronger. At least you bled on something worth your blood. I was more pissed because my blood was wasted on a goddamn Mazda 3.

I'm a fan of letting things bleed for a bit on purpose when it's something this old - better odds for tetanus avoidance, though I really should get a booster if this keeps up.
At least the doors are off with both fenders loose now. Should now be possible to pull the steering column and the rest of the interior - > make it possible to rust assess and make about eleventy patches, and get it sandblasted.
