Alberta is changing it's license plates...and it's political. (Warning: Albertan politics...with a lot of sarcasm)

If this was written about already I apologize...

It seems as though Alberta is changing it's license plates from the iconic red lettering on a white background to something more like the USA all fancified and stuff.

Unlike you guys down there who like fancy colours and stuff, Canada generally has really plain plates and in most cases...they have been around for a long time. Nunavut and PEI are the exception. They have fancified plates.

(These photo's are from !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!!

Let's Review Western Canada's plates as they have ever been.

Alberta (current):Red on white. In use since: 1987 (although the 4th number was added recently).

Kinja'd!!!

BC: Dark Blue on white Design. In use since: 1987

Kinja'd!!!

Saskatchewan: Green on white design: In use since 1977

Kinja'd!!!

This has made identifying the origin of cars very easy....for a long time. It's been nearly 30 years since a design update for two of the provinces and nearly 40 (!) years for Saskatchewan.

Wait a second you say...doesn't Canada have four western provinces?

Yeah we do. But noone likes Manitoba. Not even Manitobans. (joking..sort of)

So what you say? How is this political? I live in the USA and we update plates all the time, because our legislators like to waste time like that. Murica! Freedom! Big Macs! blah blah...blah blah.

Well....in Albertan politics there are a few political parties whom hold seats in the legislature: They are: The Progressive Conservative Party (Government for the last 40 years) The Wild Rose Party (just founded in 2008) and now official Opposition and some other smaller parties like the NDP and Liberals.

The astute among you will notice that the "Wild Rose Party" has used Alberta's provincial flower (The Wild Rose) as it's namesake. You will also notice that the current Albertan License plate says "Wild Rose Country" on the bottom

I assure you...the old Albertan license plate was not made with the "Wild Rose Party" in mind...because it preceded the founding of the party by some 21 years.

If we look at the new plate proposals (which by the way you can vote on !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! ) you will notice the provincial slogan "Wild Rose Country" is gone.

Kinja'd!!!

Gee...wonder why that is? It couldn't be because the "Wild Rose" is now the name of a political party can it? No...the government would never do that.

Kinja'd!!!

Oh wait....they totally just did that.

And don't think that this hasn't gone unnoticed in Alberta itself.

This would be the mayor of Alberta's largest city weighing in.

!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!

Here is the real kicker guys: "six years back the PCs were going to change the licence plate.

They polled Albertans on what slogan they wanted.

Three out of four liked ... you guessed it ... Wild Rose Country."

!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!

So Alberta your getting a new license plate. And then probably a new provincial flower too (since the wild rose also shares a name with the Wild Rose Party).

Congratulations on making ugly license plates.

I hope this wasn't too political for you Oppo, it's just that this was dumb. They should have left well enough alone. It would be as if New Hampshire ditched "Live free or die" because someone founded the "freedom party." and that would be pretty dumb.

I'd prefer a plain one over a decorated one any day. Even if it peels off (dad's is starting to bubble up already).

Yeah. Why Ontario can't have a proper plate dye is beyond me. I like plain plates too. Ontario's is nice it's subtle.

I believe they changed the way they make them over the past 4 years over environmental concerns. The one on my mother's van is perfect, and it was bought in 2007. My father bought the BMW in 2010. They had a proper dye at least 5 years ago.

Their license plate slogan isn't as good as Washington, DC.

If you search for "peeling license plate" in google, the first page is scattered with articles on those Ontario plates.

So far, I haven't heard anyone (including the major media) mention that as recently as 2008, Alberta planned to redesign their plate and even surveyed the public about them. The majority wanted to keep the "Wild Rose Country" slogan.

The redesign was cancelled because of economic reasons due to the "global economic downturn" as it was called then. As a stop-gap, they simply added a 7th digit. I really should read the fucking article before posting.

As far as the new one goes, why not just add a ".ca" to the Alberta logo up top? Why have the word "Alberta" on there twice?

Anyway, I'm still pissed that when I moved back to B.C. from Calgary, I had to turn in my Alberta plate. Oh well, at least I do have a "fancified" plate:

Of the three the first feels the most cohesive, the middle would be okay without the white fade around the numbers, and the bottom one looks like a drawing from a kindergarten class.
