Possible "Future New Car" contender, methinks.
Probably without the body cladding.
This, along with the Tahoe/Yukon, Silverado/Sierra, and Colorado/Canyon are on the list.

I totally didn't care for these at all at the time, but I've been noticing a few tastefully lifted ones with decent size tires lately and I'm really liking them.

These were available with the 8.1 and Allison. That is what you need. Screw MPG's
![]() 07/11/2014 at 02:12 |

They do look good with a tasteful lift.

That sounds like a lot of tire shedding torque available at any moment.

I remember when the Avalanche first came out. From the moment I first saw one, I thought it was the coolest truck on the road.

Plus, they make tents for these...

I've always wished my dad would've bought one instead of his Silverado. But now I'm glad he didn't because I can have one all to myself!
My uncle almost bought one of the final "Black Diamond" edition Avalanches, but got a Ram instead, sadly.

Oh that's awesome! I didn't know that.

My dad has one. The generation after this one. It's gigantic, thirsty, and made almost entirely of plastic on the inside.

Plenty of room for activities.

So like any other GM truck made in the last 20 years?
![]() 07/11/2014 at 02:21 |

I wish the gas mileage was better, it sucks!
But if you put a small lift on it actually looks decent.
I liked these a lot when new

My schools groundskeeper has one. I've seen him driving it up and down outdoor stairs. Overall it appears to be quite a capable truck.
![]() 07/11/2014 at 02:24 |

If it's the same as the around 14 I'm getting right now, I'll be fine. A little less, I'll live. Inefficient cars are just a common thing at my house.
![]() 07/11/2014 at 02:25 |

Yup, probably the last generation of truly capable GM trucks, everything after seems to sit really low in the front and becomes useless.
![]() 07/11/2014 at 02:29 |
|
Yeah. Pretty much.
I've never been a fan of it. As a kid I thought it was a step down from the Tahoe we had, but that's just because I had the whole third row all to myself on family trips. So, it's never been a really good family hauler, nor do I think it's a really good truck. I mean, it's good for the odd Home Depot trip, but other than that the bed is far too thin and short.
![]() 07/11/2014 at 02:31 |

I've always thought of it as a truck for someone who doesn't really need a truck but wants the looks of a truck.
![]() 07/11/2014 at 02:40 |

If you're okay with the reduced bed capacity, it's alright. Cabin space is pretty massive. When you're in a pinch you can get 6 people in there. Though, the person in the middle front seat had better be short.
And did I mention it was thirsty? I'm talking $200 a month thirsty.

so... 90% of truck buyers?
![]() 07/11/2014 at 02:42 |

Well, it is a Suburban with the back cut off.
Yup, so right about the same as my dad's Silverado and my Safari

Yup

When my neighbors got one, before I saw it they told me it was an SUV that turns into a pickup truck. I was thoroughly disappointed. Also, how does that even make the tiniest bit of sense.
![]() 07/11/2014 at 02:51 |
|
Do you not know how it does? Midgate!
It makes the useable space something like 8.5 feet.
![]() 07/11/2014 at 02:53 |
|
Still not an accurate description. If they told me it was a pickup truck with a factory bed cover and other neat goodies, that would make sense. It's not an SUV that becomes a pickup in any way.
![]() 07/11/2014 at 02:54 |

If it's a second generation, it's technically a Suburban minus the back window, but yeah, it's a truck, not an SUV.

I guess that is a good point. Your van isn't made for efficiency! I know cause a buddy has one that they get around 15, which isn't awful considering it's a large truck.
I'm amazed at how well they hold vue though. Still quite expensive!
![]() 07/11/2014 at 07:54 |

I'll be honest. I love them. Say what you will about the looks, they're so damn convenient. The guy I ran sound for in high school and college has one, and I learned to love it. I support this.

Either you go low.
Or really high.

My buddy has one, we regularly pile 5 guys, all our snowboard gear, a small grill and cooler with lunch and beer in it for trips to the ski area. Everyone has everything they need and are seated comfortably, not a bad truck imo.

The 8.1 was mated to a 4L80E. No Allison on the Avalanche - if there was, I'd have sold more of 'em.
![]() 07/11/2014 at 11:10 |
|
AWESOME! I really like them! They actually invented the Rambox.
![]() 07/11/2014 at 14:15 |
|
Why would they do that, when they mated it to the Allison in the Silverado's?
![]() 07/11/2014 at 14:23 |
|
Because the Allison would fit on the GMT800 Silverado but oddly enough not the GMT820 Suburban
![]() 07/11/2014 at 14:26 |

That makes almost no sense, about the same amount of sense as no Duramax Suburban. And no demand isn't the answer either, since there are relatively large businesses doing conversions.
![]() 07/11/2014 at 14:41 |
|
It does make almost no sense. As someone who continually had to explain that to prospective customers, I know just how little sense it made. The frames are nearly identical, but the Suburban/Avalanche frame was lacking nearly two inches of clearance that the Silverado/Sierra had. Yes, it's about as simple as installing a 2'' body lift.

This makes me think that in the late 90's to mid 2000's, GM headquarters were ran under the Pop Copy standard.

That guy seriously put his own (shitty) intro over a video of a youtube video he recorded with a handycam
But, yes. That's "Old GM" for ya

Yes he did, you got start your pirating company somehow.

I've always had a thing for these! In this area it's cheaper than a 1500/2500 gasser crewcab, while still being comparably equipped/convenient. I've always wished they would've worked the look of the plastic-cladded model's frontend onto the naked ones.

I was looking at pictures of Avalanches on google when I clicked on this beauty and then noticed the website.
I vote this. I'll get one too.

I had a friend whose father bought one when they first came out. I loved going for rides in it and I'm nostalgic for first gens because of it.
