They are talking about how reliable their cars are and their Civics with their extended 7 year warranties are so great they're going to get another civic next and yadda yadda..
I need some caffeine over here, I'm about to fall asleep.

Ask them something that they wouldn't know, that will make them second-guess their car. Like "have you had any issues with your brakes? My friend did...". See what happens, :)

Tell them you know a guy with a Fiat that has a lifetime warranty. Watch their eyes get wide.

Mine aren't either. The only exciting cars are a WRX and a C30 (mine). I even overheard them talking about how myself and the WRX owner shouldn't have such "fancy cars".

I'd start fucking with them asking if they hear a soft tick coming from the wheels yet. Tell them it's a sign of the roter brakes going bad and needing replacement. They'll drive home in silence listing for and noise coming from the wheels.

They probably won't even know what a Fiat is, at least they wouldn't have before the Fiat-Chrysler merger. lol

There's one other car guy in my department. Some other coworkers like to make fun of him for his DD, a 1980 Suzuki Samurai. They just don't understand.

Where do you work that other people care so much about what other people drive?

Most of my coworkers have Kei Cars, but there are a few exceptions in the parking lot. We have a couple of these:
And one of these with white racing stripes:
And a few of these with lips/rims/etc which are obvious optional add-ons or aftermarket parts:
I'm a JHS teacher, so... That's something said, I guess.

most of my coworkers are scientists and drive CRVs, Accords and Camrys. But there is ine chemist who has a V8 Grand Cherokee and we get to talk cars and trucks and smoke and donuts from time to time and one guy who works at another company in our building who always parks funny. Never sure if he's a car guy or just likes to park like an asshat because the lot is only 1/3 used.

It's tongue in cheek, but my parents have a lifetime power train warranty on their 08 Grand Caravan...

The Suzuki Samurai (the Jimny here in Japan) was not produced as the Samurai in overseas markets until 1981 and after.

My bad. I was a year off, on a car I don't even own.

Just being a pedantic ass about a car I really like (I've long admired the many Jimnys I see driving around here).

You know what
I couldn't care less what other people drive. Hell, my wife and I each have cars that are as utilitarian as they get. The average human wants to just get to work and back without any sort of hassle. They don't want major repairs, they don't want to worry if the car falls apart en route, they just want reliable. Flavor doesn't matter.
If you step back and look at car culture, we're insane. Some of us don't even go for extreme amounts of power, but instead a car that is as unreliable as possible, provided it's easy to work on. We are nuts.
But we're happily nuts, and so we are right. You just need to acknowledge that they're right as well.

I work in IT, and have not had an intelligent car conversion in 10 years. Our current team lead doesn't even have a car.
Thanks for being here during the work day, Oppo.

Almost all my coworkers drive Prii, and the few who don't are in slightly larger hybrids for the HOV exemption. There's one guy in another office who drives a w124 diesel, but he's the only one who's even remotely car-savvy or interested. So yeah.

Well they don't, I sometimes just like to mess with people.
There's one guy at my office though. He openly started dissing the Chevy silverado, saying how bad it was. Then told a friend how awesome his gmc Sierra was....in the same conversation and breath. That was bit awkward...

LOL. Job's pretty good. Just need better people.
One of the guys that was on my team was a rail enthusiast. I could at least talk about those with him. I learned a thing or two about the rail system, too.
I miss him. Trains are much better than video games and sci-fi movie talk.

my office is full of ballsport fans. a couple folks know a little about motorsport, but not what you'd expect given the fact that we all work AT A DAMN RACE TRACK

So? Your things may not be my thing, but your thing is ok...
I imagine they would be equally bored listening to you talk passionately about cars. It's a big world, with all kinds of people in it. Relish the diversity.

I too work in IT. Fortunately there are a number of car enthusiasts, most don't own anything amazing but theres always news to talk about. I am fortunate in that aspect.

I'm sure they would be, which is why I don't talk about cars at work, or with them. This is Oppo, we tend to rant about random shit. I'm just ranting because I had to listen to it and it was incredibly boring.
