Have a million or two rolled up in your sock drawer? Great. I have found the appropriate outlet for your rainy-day trust fund. Behold, a !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! .
It comes with all records and documentation, and is being sold "as-is" in Meridianville, AL. You're probably going to have to do a little maintenance before it gets off the ground, but who doesn't love a good project, er, `copter? The bidding starts at $1,323,000.00 with the reserve not met.
In other news, if you're not browsing !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! every so often, you're missing out on some !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! and !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! deals.

I was looking into getting a wagon, but this will do fine.

Hmmm. I don't think this will fit in my driveway. Might have to cut down the tree.

The real question is; Will it baby?
Your move, Torch.

I'd much rather have the Oppocopter .

"Medium Lift?" As in, this thing could lift something weighing roughly 2,500 pounds?
I mean, you could buy a motorhome and car trailer for race weekends, but slap a cot and a TV in here and I think you'd be on your way!

I'd rather have the Citation III for $500,000.

Would you keep the cots inside or swap it for something more comfortable? Is there room to mount a TV? Are La-Z-Boys flight rated?

Kickstarter this. If people will kickstarter potato salad, they will kickstarter a freakin military helicopter.

If the internet can raise $60,000 for someone to make potato salad, we sure as hell should be able to buy this. Which one of us is going to set up the Kickstarter?

Doesn't it cost about 20k an hour to fly one of these?

I saw the interior of GWB's white-top Blackhawk when he flew into my airport in 2004. That's a good place to start.

My Guard unit was an attack helo battalion, and one of the Huey crew chiefs had this bumpersticker that said "When the last Blackhawk flies to the boneyard its crew will fly home in a Huey".

They make "executive" packages for these things. Leather seats, sound proofing, etc.

How many V6 Apaches could we get for that?
![]() 07/09/2014 at 09:54 |

Maybe if you add in the price of the 'copter and the amount of use it will get.
Fuel isn't anywhere that expensive, and maintenance can't cost that much unless it's getting an off frame resto everytime it's used.

They're also selling an M5 ...
![]() 07/09/2014 at 10:19 |

That seems cheap. Idk much about what planes cost, I just figured a lot more than that.
![]() 07/09/2014 at 10:33 |

With $1.3M you could go for the blackhawk here, OR wait until some of the police Caprices starts filtering through the auction site and buy enough of those for a one-make race.
![]() 07/09/2014 at 10:47 |

I'm intrigued by how the government came into possession of a salvage-title M5. They're pretty adamant about it not getting back on the road, but there are loads of goodies I could retrofit into my e39 530i.

![]() 07/09/2014 at 10:51 |

It is cheap, the listing mentions some engine issues, it is hard to tell if it is a good deal without getting a look at the log books.
![]() 07/09/2014 at 10:51 |
|
Likely, they're just covering their liability. The government is remarkably risk-averse. If anything is wrong with it that might make it unsafe, they want to make sure that you can't sue them over it, ever. There is an endless supply of unscrupulous people who see the government as a big, giant checkbook.

How many MPG does it get?
![]() 07/09/2014 at 11:36 |

NP! (They go for $14-17 million new)
Granted, the UH60-A's only have 3000 shaft horsepower. "Only." 3000 SHP.
Just sayin'.
![]() 07/09/2014 at 11:37 |
|
But the Cobra will not baby. Well, I mean there is a second seat which... is good for either a toddler or a new pilot.
Both are about as good on the controls... so... kinda a wash either way.
![]() 07/09/2014 at 11:39 |
|
Typically low mile (sub 1k) V8 cars seem to go for right around 20k. Someone needs to make this spec league a thing.
![]() 07/09/2014 at 11:39 |
|
In all seriousness... it burns 800-900 pounds of fuel an hour at 120kts.
![]() 07/09/2014 at 11:42 |
|
Of course it will baby. Besides the front seat for the copilot/gunner, there's the ammo bay behind the cannon which is accessible by side doors.

You have clearly, never seen my wife:
1. Drive.
2. Shoot.
She does either with the grace of a seizing elephant wearing tap shoes on a greased floor. Hmm... granted... I must concede your point that it will in fact... baby. I mean, it DOES have wing stations.

note from son of a cobra pilot: unlike nearly every chopper ever, pilot sits in back, and the gunner sits forward. Source of much confusion.
![]() 07/09/2014 at 12:13 |

I didn't specify station, only that there was a second seat.
You are certainly not wrong. Buuuuut all the tandem cockpit helos I know of have gunners up front and pilot in the back. (Cobra, Apache, Hind).
Unrelated sidenote: I have a lot of respect for the Cobra, but the Super Cobra is the sexy beast in my mind.

S/N: 79-23310.
That's going to have a lot of flight hours. If an aircraft from 1984 I saw had over 4,500 flight hours, I can only imagine how many more this has. No thanks. I'll wait for another Chinook to pop onto the auction block.

Really scary news is that the listing mentions that the logs are incomplete and sporadic. Expect to be dropping a lot of money into repairs that you may or may not need simply because you can't prove that time and or cycle limited parts have been properly maintained or replaced as needed.
![]() 07/09/2014 at 13:18 |

True you would probably need at the minimum an annual and probably a major just to figure out what was wrong.
![]() 07/09/2014 at 13:32 |

BTU could use this - he could chopper his i8 or sls gt around the country from track to track.

If it has major engine issues... 701C Turboshafts cost ~$625K each... It appears to have some of the more recent modifications; LED caution/advisory panel/master warning, EFQI, and some others. It's a 79 with only 4900 hours, not bad actually. And it has 2k pages of airframe history accompanying it. Depending on what she needs to get off the ground... I'd say anywhere from another $500k to $2m, not counting labor. Sounds like a fun weekend project!
![]() 07/09/2014 at 13:51 |

Jumped in too early, It's just odd for most people to think of the pilot riding back-seat. I didn't know that about the Hind. I had heard hey had a rear-gunner with linkages to the gun... but that doesn't make much sense now.
My dad's comment about the differences between a Cobra and Super Cobra go something along the lines of "don't gamble in former french colonies, and don't fly over water with one engine." I'm pretty confused by most of what he says, but those both seem legit. the 3' wide profile of an original cobra is pretty svelte.
![]() 07/09/2014 at 13:52 |
|
yeah, its top speed was lacking.
![]() 07/09/2014 at 14:04 |
|
Apparently, this one has 4900 hours on it.
![]() 07/09/2014 at 14:04 |
|
Agreed on all accounts! Haha.
And yeah, two engines makes up about 75% or the reason I like the new Super Cobra. Like the UH60, it can fly most times even with a single engine failure. AND, it's toting about 2.5 times the original's horsepower. BEAST.
![]() 07/09/2014 at 14:08 |
|
About .17 MPG, or 6 gallons/mile. Yeah.
![]() 07/09/2014 at 14:55 |

Cheaper than these Blackhawks:
