So I was tryin'a hit 100 down the free way when this family of four in a station wagon...

Just kidding, I may be a Mustang driver but I'm not that bad. What really happened was I went off the road in the most bizarre way I could imagine.

You see, I like to drive with half my right foot on the gas in anticipation of having to blip the throttle for a down shift (yes, I belive myself to be the next Senna, heel-toeing while coming up to the apex of an on-ramp). The problem is I can't reach the gas pedal with my heel so I kind of ride it with the right half of my right foot and roll my foot when I need to blip. Sometimes I find I leave my foot over both pedals even after finishing the down shift.

Today I decided to brake extra hard before making a square right onto my favorite on-ramp. I slammed on the brakes, but at the same time, inadvertently hit the gas while in second. This was due to that habit I developed; of keeping one foot on two pedals. What happened next can only be described as the most unnecessary and slow loss of control while understeering. You'd think my car had a Reliant Robin type setup with one wheel doing all the turning. At first I thought my brakes were shot, but after a dazed few seconds sitting on a dirt shoulder, I realized what happened. The combination of hammering the gas while braking and turning meant my car was done listening to my shit. It was just too much input, despite the wide sticky tires and ABS doing all they could to save my arse. I actually think the rears may have broken loose and propelled me, in a sort of moving burnout, while I slammed on every pedal in a panic.

I'm super lucky there wasn't a curb or a sign post, otherwise I'd be like a Brazillian at a soccer game (i.e. rekt). I got off with some superficial scratches to my rim, despite the fact I hit a mound of dirt in a lowered car.

Anywho, let that be a lesson to all y'all. Heel toeing can be a dangerous habit if you do it wrong.

Tl;dr - typical mustang driver can't drive his car, flies off the road

1. I was coming here to rip you a new one when I saw the first line...

2. You should get better pedals. The ones on my car make it super easy to heel-toe.... but I also have big feet....

Yeah looking into a longer gas pedal for sure. Stock is too small.

ha! I hate being a statistic. What sucks is my brother happened to be in the car with me and now he's not letting me live this down. Says I should get myself a car with less pedals if I have a hard time figuring out which is the stop pedal.

Maybe you should. Or just let him drive, I'm sure he knows which is which.

I salute this quote. Also, practice makes perfect! so.. uhhh... do it again until it works?

I did something like that not long ago. I was trying to heel toe on a tight tight hander, and I was thinking to much about keeping revs up and not enough about breaking. I went into the corner with too much, and under steered like a.. well like thet Mustang you posted. Lol. it was scary, but I didn't go off the road.

It happens. Reminds my of the time I gently crested a turn in my Jeep only to end up swapping ends, ending up backwards right in the middle of the intersection. There was a wet patch and with nearly bald all terrains and an extremely short wheel base, it didn't take kindly to the loss of traction. That was a bit embarrassing.

So I'm confused, were you setting up to heel toe, and then blipped the throttle before clutching in? And it takes some practice to heel toe on Mustang's, but I believe you can get some wider pedal covers.

I did blip the throttle on the downshift using my version of heel toeing, but, as you can probably imagine, under really hard braking it can be extremely unproductive if you forget to move your foot off the gas like I did when I approached the corner.

So to be more specific, started braking, blippped the throttle for a downshift while still braking; closer to the corner meant to slide my foot off the gas and onto the brake only for a hard deceleration but didn't because I'm dumb.

And yes the pedals were never designed to be reached with the heel of anyone's foot. I should have realized the danger of my practice sooner. Won't be doing it anymore until I get longer pedals (the brake and gas are already sufficiently close, so I need longer pedal covers, not wider.)

Are you driving a SN197? I don't find the length to be a problem in mine, just the width a little bit. I'm able to downshift under hard braking at a track, but I've been practicing it when I drive it on the street for a couple years. I wouldn't be too discouraged, because practice makes perfect! Just maybe practice at more reasonable braking strengths until you know you're ready haha.
