I never thought id say this. As i am extremely contrarian. But I think I've changed my mind.
I think I want a GoPro. I've looked into others out there. But nothing is quite as good all around. I'd love to have a new contour when it comes out if its any good. Because that just fits me better. Contrarianism.
I want to film all my badassery in my car. So people can watch my epicness. My perfect shifts. And my epically bad missed shifts here and there. And then I could review things as well.
What do you guys think?

Do it

1) Get GoPro [At least a Hero2, in my opinion)
2) Get a second plastic housing
3) Drill into that second housing to get to the 3.5 mm aux jack
4) Place cheap external microphone somewhere close to either the engine bay or the exhaust.
5) ?!?!?!?
6) Profit when you don't have to put terrible music on top of your videos because all you hear is the housing rattling.

Get what works best for what you want to do (or might want to do in the future), contrarian, conformist, or otherwise. I got a GoPro from my awesome wife for my birthday, 2011, and love it. My main desire for it was for track days with the Z. For me, it's a great way to see what I'm doing (or, should be doing, or doing differently...) on the track. It is quite unforgiving, though. You can't hide your mistakes on video. ("Ohhhh, man, did I ever screw that turn-in..."). There's a video of a guy on our local track rolling his prepped Boxster, with a passenger to boot, and he's pretty much permanently going to be That Guy. Why he posted it to YouTube is beyond me.
Unexpected upsides: I can share videos with friends and family who will likely never make it to an event with me, my kid loves watching it ("Da! Z! Fash!"), you can use it as a dash cam if you want, the time lapse and integration let you set up outdoor cam watch if that's necessary, super small mount-anywhere waterproof lets you film anything anywhere. Toddler-cam in a pool? Sure, knock yourself out. Mountain biking crash? Fine. Surfing? Grab your board. Skiing/boarding? Apres viewing abounds.

Second! But note: they don't all have the 3.5 mm. Later versions dropped it for a different port and need an adapter. Hero2 has the 3.5 mm. I have the Hero2. Does everything I want, but more picky techy types think the non-HD is a downside. Get a "dead cat" (honest, that's the term apparently) windscreen for the mic. I got a $30 lapel mic at RadioShack the day before a track day, ran the cord out the back of the car and clipped it the license plate frame, with a paper towel twist-tied over it for a makeshift windscreen. It actually worked really well, and the sound is much improved.

Are you in sales? Don Draper? But seriously thanks for the response. Got me more excited for it! It'd probably be only for car stuff. As I'm not into much else that would use it

:) Thanks! Actually, I sorta am in sales. I'm a "Senior Application Scientist", technically in the sales department. My job is to be the tech knowledge and reality check behind the sales account reps. Apparently, a scientist who's fine with talking to people is not that common.
I honestly only wanted it for car stuff. Everything else has been a surprise add on. Use it to video yourself doing practice presentations/talks. With video, you're your harshest critic. No one likes how they look/sound recorded. A guy at work uses his to record his competitions as a pro pinball competitor (that's a thing, apparently. I had no idea.) Have fun!

That sounds like an interesting job! Definitely not too many talkative scientists lol. I'm sure I'll find something else to use it for eventually!

I actually bought mine not too long ago, and I'm glad I did. I bought a Hero 3+ Silver, and take it to track days and auto-cross events. It sure is fun to keep an eye on your driving from another perspective, and it lets you use it with your peers for suggestions.
As Boulder said, (ironically I bought it for my Z too :P) they make great not just for cars, but anything. Install a simple app on your phone and you can see the preview and use it as security camera even... Its a fun toy.
