And it was a fun show about cute anime characters doing cute anime character things. You know like burtal murders, genocide, child abuse, biological weapons, cults, depression, suicide, and the ocasional psychologial breakdown in which you wet yourself while stabbing a 9 year old who's stuck to a cross while your twin sister screams at you to stop. Oh and friendship.

What would you recommend for someone who has never seen an anime, wich one would be a good start?

Cowboy Bebop is a great first anime that has a very film noir feel to it. It's also very western in its story telling style. It's very well directed and the soundtrack is amazing. It has few anime tropes, however it will get you used to watching anime. I recommend starting with episode 5 as there is not a solid overarching plot and the beginning isn't great. If you like episode 5 then you can either continue from there or go back and watch the episodes that come before it, it's up to you. You can watch it here.

Baccano is also really good and actually takes place in gangland america. Like Cowboy Bebop it's western in its style however tends to take a bit more of a japanese approach in it's non linear timeline method of storytelling. You can watch it here.

Both of these anime have wonderful english voice overs so you don't have to watch them with japanese voices and english subtitles. That should be good to get you started. If you have any more questions I'm more than willing to answer them.

Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex. If you liked Blade Runner, you'll like this.
Greatest anime of all time - in my opinion.

you keep track? Man, these days it seems like I'll start a series, get half way through and realize I've seen it before. I doubt I've seen a hundred series. I did watch the whole Bleach series though. My god was that drawn out.

That was by far one of the most fucked up show I've ever watched.

I finished one so far. Death Note.
I started Naruto, but got bored of it.
I am now watching Initial D. Almost halfway.

Now it's time to get out and get laid!
Just kidding. My wife and daughter love anime. I simply can't get into it. I only watched about 1 season of digimon when it was on Fox kids, and I watched Initial D up until the 3rd stage movie, or whatever it was.

Thanks for the advice, I've heard of cowboy bebop, I've seen some art but never the anime. I'm gonna star with that one. I'm a graphic designer, back in college everyone was so into anime and japanese music and mangas and cosplay I just hated it before ever trying to watch one. Akira is the closest I've gotten to anime (awesome movie by the way). But it's been a while now, time to give anime a second chance. Thanks for the answer!

Give it a try. I made another post suggestion that someone try and watch cowboy bebop. Honestly Anime is like any other medium, for every good show there's 10 bad ones.

It just pisses me off that they're all basically the same when it comes to emotions. There's always the "water running down eyes" the shocked face where pupils disappear and the mouth makes the chin disappear, there's a talking animal doing normal things, like no one points out there's a bear in a space suit, and things like that. Plus I have the habit of making mock japanese sumo wrestler voices and my daughter gives me the Luigi death stare.

Death note was great up until a certain character got killed. Naruto is not a good series so I don't blame you. I don't really like Initial D however I think it's because it's just not my kind of show. If you like Death Note you should checkout Code Geass. It's very similar in the regard that an extremely smart student gets access to an other worldly power. Though I actually prefer Code Geass because it has giant robots and explosions.

Not all anime have that same style. That became popular in the early 2000s thanks to the industry going through a moe (really cute things) period. However you're going to have your weird anime and you're going to have your serious anime. Cowboy Bebop for the most part is a pretty serious anime that's a pretty realistic Sci-Fi series though it has it's moments of comedic relief but it's always realistic in a way. Also the art is also very anatomically correct so no ginormous eyes.
There's also shows like Monster which is 100% realistic. There's nothing outrageous or funny about it. It's extremely dark and very morally confusing and the characters know it.
Then of course you have shows like Full Metal Alchemist which do have fantastical elements in them but still manage to tell an awesome story.
Basically the point that I'm trying to get across is that generalizing anime is like generalizing movies. Yes action movies are usually the most popular and what most people see but that does not mean that movies like the Shawshank Redemption and Schindler's List don't exist. Same with Anime, it's nothing more than a visual medium and while the outrageous stuff is popular and what most people see it does not mean that there is not serious anime that doesn't have water pouring out of eyes, pupils disappearing or bears in space suits. Though those are pretty enjoyable too.

Actually that's kind of the point of the show. This show was made back when fish eyes were very popular in the industry and people were starting to tire of it. So it's almost kind of a satire of it that they put it in a show where everyone is murdering one another. Also it adds juxtaposition of cute anime characters murdering the shit out of one another.
