Pirelli reveal images of concept 18-inch F1 tyres
Formula One tyre suppliers Pirelli have released digital renderings of what their prototype 18-inch tyres will look like, ahead of testing them at Silverstone on Wednesday.
The Italian manufacturer has developed the low profile tyres, which will be trialled by Lotus on their 2014 car, to provoke debate about whether such rubber should be used in F1 racing in the future.It has been suggested that running with larger wheels and tyres would lead to greater technology transfer between F1 tyres and road car rubber.
However, Pirelli say they will only progress with the initiative if there is a genuine desire from F1 racing's various stakeholders to follow such a direction.

You want to do something to pass down to road rubber? Fill the circuit with potholes, and make a low-profile 18" tire that will survive 54 laps of that.
I just can't imagine how much work it will be to redesign the whole car around these new wheel/tire combo when the time comes.

Don't F1 cars rely on the big sidewalls for a lot of their suspension?
"Greater technology transfer between F1 tyres and road car rubber" sounds to me more like "we can sell more tyres if we say they're just like the ones F1 use".

not gunna lie, my first thought was that someone somehow got a set of F1 wheels and was selling them on craigsliet.
first thought after that: ok, some kid is rolling his mrk3 jetta to fit these right about now.

I have one F1 rim, so a 1/4th of their car can be hellaflush for the right price. Also that tire will need to be STRETCHED.

Coincidentally, back injuries in F1 will skyrocket when they implement larger rims. It's a known fact that teams run their suspension super hard to deal with aero loads, leaving the tire sidewalls to provide suspension, taking away that sidewall is bad news bears.
Will be interesting to see how the cars react.

Really? I figured the loads on the car were optimal the way it was, and they would just make adjustments to compensate for the shorter sidewall.

It's common sense, if you sit down and think about it. The only part of the vehicle touching the ground is the tires, no chassis or suspension components touch the ground. Every single aero component is attached to the chassis, there isn't any (major) unsprung aero, so the thousands of pounds of aero are attached to the chassis, not the suspension or tires. The link between the chassis where the aero loads are and the tires where the vehicle contacts the road is the suspension, in order to keep the suspension from being compressed so far that the chassis touches the ground a very stiff suspension must be used. That is why a third-spring is used, it maintains ride height (i.e. very stiff) while allowing the side springs to control the suspension in roll.

There is debate whether these tyres will be good for the sport (unsprung weight / suspension travel / looks / acceleration / etc).
But first thing I thought was these will be good for punctures. Could it make it easier for the driver to get back to the pits, since they'll be riding on a wheel much closer to the tyre size than the 13" wheels?
Unless, of course, Pvt Jackson comes to spoil the day again.

Yeah the impact of these would change the car quite a bit, if they get rid of the FRIC it will be even more. I doubt they will introduce the tyres next season.
