With the LMP1 field in the midst of a growth spurt, I'd like to see Mazda jump on the bandwagon. I don't know about you guys, but I think a couple of 4-rotor Wankels would be a great addition to the race. (even though they'd probably use a "Skyactiv" turbo 4 or something)

Return the rotary in a hybrid system but completely unlike anything we've seen in LeMans. Have the rotary spin at a constant RPM to generate electricity while electric motors do all the heavy work. Basically their Mazda 2 Range Extender prototype on steroids.

mazda simply can't afford it. They need to strengthen their core products and market share before entering into loss-leading lemans forays. In a perfect world, they'd be running an full spread of motorsports teams. Sad really.

didn't they ban the rotary after their win in the 787?

I would argue that no, they don't need to strengthen their core products, which are mighty fine, just market them better in some countries and sell more. Here in Aus every man and his dog, as well as his dogs dog, are running around in Mazda3s. These are non-premium, completely non-aspirational sedans and hatches which aren't the cheapest in the marketplace, and are the best private (ie non fleet) selling cars in Australia most months. I think in Israel they sell a lot too (basing this on every time I see a news story from Israel or Palestine, there are like 10 Mazda3s (Axelas?) in every shot.

I draw exactly like you do. Just saying. Although I always try and put a door (plus door handles, locks and mirrors) and put the rear caliper on the rear of the disk. Otherwise, really eerie looking at this.

the reality is here in the US they barely have a foothold in the market. Considering how hot the hot hatch market is here, you don't hear any mention of Mazda. The Miata, while wonderful, remains a very niche vehicle. Their CX-5 cute-ute is wonderful, but doesn't sell. Their Mazda 6 is wonderful in pretty much every way, yet is outsold by all its competitors. Maybe its marketing? Im genuinely not sure. All i know is that in the US, their products are largely overlooked, outside of the very unique demographic Oppo attracts.

Pretty much. I don't know that it was outright banned, but the FIA added a performance multiplier or something that made it impossible to field a competitive rotary powered vehicle.
