Had some people crash at my apt on Saturday night, one of them ended up picking up her car the next day because her contacts were out and she couldn't see fuck-all so she had to go home to be able to drive her car home, hahaha. Anyways she calls and tells me it wouldn't turn over. To me this means the engine won't turn over... So I go what kind of car is it? "it's a camry" What year? "idk" Is it newer? "yes".

Well I go out there, turns out, "it wont turn over" meant the key wouldn't turn in the ignition. So... One yanks on the steering wheel while turning the key, that was the only problem, haha.

Maybe best not to yank. Just easing the wheel off the lock should allow the key to turn.

To me, it means the same thing. The starter isn't rotating the engine.

To some, it's just a term they use to say they were unable to start their car. Just like "hacked" is a term people use when they fall for a phishing scam and give username and passwords away.

hmm. Should I "lock" the steering when I park? I know that the Jetta I have access to locks the ignition if the steering gets locked (probably like many other cars), and will only unlock if the wheel is in a certain position away from the lock.

It really bugs me when people don't know what year their own car is.

Yeah Some poeple don't get steering lock out. I remember when I discovered this. I had owned my own car for about a month when one day the key wouldn't turn. I just started juggling things and figured it out myself. It's literally that easy. What is really freaky is when cars don't do it like H3s.

In all fairness I stopped to help a stranded co-worker on the way out of the parking lot last week. He had a Hyundai Accent 5 speed and the wheel was locked and key wouldn't turn. Odd thing is he got to the exit of the parking lot before this happened. Having been stuck in a similar situation where the key wouldn't turn for an inexplicable reason (it eventually did in the Audi) I tried to help. No dice. No amount of pulling on the wheel or anything would get the key to turn or unlock the steering wheel. No idea what caused it.

Or how many cylinders the engine has. That's always funny when they dont know that.

Wow, did he manage to park such that he didn't need to steer till he got to the exit?

I suppose that's true, it's just something I usually hear in reference to actual engine/starter/battery related problems. But I suppose the ignition isn't exempt from this statement.

Sounds like GM needs to issue a recall for that.

Nah, the lock is only there to keep thieves from steering your car onto a flatbed or out of your driveway or something.

bought a miata with a replaced engine. came with the service order for the garage that did it. it starts "customer says car won't start" and continues "found hole in engine block"
