"ttyymmnn" (ttyymmnn)

My boys woke up to this today. There will be a new problem tomorrow, or maybe a question like, "What is the capital of Azerbaijan?" And they'll have to use an atlas to figure it out. Dad level: "Asshole" achieved.

hehehe. right up until they learn how to change the passcode and you cant change it anymore :P

They won't. And, since I'm likely to forget it, I made the password hint the actual password. So if they try enough times it will give it to them. Today was the first day, so it's still a work in progress. I'll tweak it a bit as we go forward.

To reach the next level of "Total Dick" give them calculus.

No, I have to be able to solve the problem myself. They're only in 5th and 2nd grade.

too bad there can't be audio unlocks. "Play an E minor scale on the harmonica provided" would be a good one. Also, I have no idea if that's actually possible. Are harmonicas chromatic?

As I said, next level.

I like that idea. As far as I know, they are. The extent of my knowledge about the harmonica is that when you blow, you get one note, when you suck, you get the note a half step higher. I've never learned to play. All the boys do with it is be annoying.

I would have loved this as a kid. My dad was a legitimate dick and would take my computer to his office whenever he didn't want me to use it...

You boot it into single user mode and run that command.
It will trick the machine into thinking it's new, and walks you through the "setup your mac" wizard, creating a new admin account.

That might be handy. They have no admin on their accounts, but they can still change the password. But they don't know how. Yet.

I see a harmonica. Blowing that enough might force an unlock without any maths attempted. "I'm going to play the harmonica...badly...every day dad!"

This is brilliant. What a good way to make your kids use their brains over the summer.

so by the end of summer you should have them calculating true position at MMC. Whenever I get grief from one of them about math (I'm never going to use this, its way too hard, etc.) I write out a TP callout. I then say if they can solve this they don't have to do their homework. I don't give them the formula, or the dimensions needed, but we've also never gotten that far. If they say that they will never use it, I inform them that I have similar problems nearly every day.

Blueprint stuff. Where the hole goes v. where it is. Totally useless if you aren't dealing with prints all the time.

Wut? So that isn't 6210 - 3172. I must have missed the invisible parts of this problem.

Gotcha. When I was in grad school, I worked at Kinko's and found myself using algebra every single day. People would come in and say, "I need this enlarged/reduced to x inches." And it's simple algebra from there. I never have to do the quadratic equation, but I solve for an unknown regularly.

That's a diatonic in the picture. One key. Chromatics have a button that can change the key. Some are capable of an entire octave. Diatonics are your typical blues/ country harps while Chromatics are basically a German thing.

Ironically, the only reason I know that Baku is the capital of Azerbaijan is due to a video game. Part of Battlefield 4 takes place there, so it piqued my curiosity. I likely would have never even heard of it otherwise.
