Not to sound like an ass, but seeing as you own one, is there a reason for the big gap between the hood and the bumper on these cars? They are ALL like that, so I have to wonder if there is like a small intake or something there? It looks too small to be anything other than poor quality control, but it's too big for me to accept that Ford made them ALL like that without a reason.

I did it to my Stratus once and it took a loooong time and your arms will most certainly be sore. But, your paint will feel smoother than glass and it will also look amazing. I plan on clay barring the M3 about twice a year, once before it gets ridiculously cold/starts snowing and when it gets warm again to get all the winter grime off.

Not sure, I was told by my father to do it before you waxed the car because you did just wax it (and your car is pretty new) then clay barring would be pointless maybe even detrimental to your paint/clear coat. My suggestion would be to wait until the next time you wax your ST and clay bar before it.

I would also ask around here and watch some of DRIVE/ Clean to see what people that are probably more qualified than I am say about the subject of clay barring.

Well it took me about 20 minutes to wash my entire car, top to bottom. The drying was another 10. The waxing is a bit tricky.

You have to apply the wax one section/panel at a time. I start from the hood and move around the car; once the car is fully covered in wax, which took me about 20 minutes, I let the car sit for about 30 minutes with a timer and go inside to watch TV while the wax does it's magic. Then after the 30 minutes, I go back out and wipe off the excess which takes as long as you need to get it all off! I took about an hour and a half today to do it all.

Also, I only put on one layer of wax, add more time if you want to add more layers.

Clay bar after wash, before wax. A clay bar is designed to pull everything that you can't get off your paint with soap and water off. I am in no way am I professional but I you used to do a couple of cars shows a year when I drove Corvettes and I spent a ton of time figuring out how to get my cars "show ready."

Here are a couple of pics of blacktruck, I washed , claybared, polished, and waxed him last weekend. If in your opinion he looks like shit you can ignore everything I say after the pics.

The first thing you want to do is get everything off your paint. Which means washing and clay bar. I start with blue dawn dishsoap (THIS IS THE ONLY TIME YOU SHOULD USE DISHSOAP ON CAR, if you use it any other time it will take most of the wax or whatever protect-ant you have on the car off) I use the plain dawn because to me it seems like it has the least amount of additives, no hand softeners or other housewifey shit, just soap. The first thing I do is dump a bunch (really, a lot I will usually use a whole bottle of dish soap when getting ready to wax) of the dish soap into a garden sprayer like the one above, set the mix percentage on the sprayer as high as possible so it's really sudsy. I use this as the initial rinse for the vehicle instead of just water from the hose. Get in every crack and crevice you can hose it down really well. I spray inside the wheel wells really well and wheels too. Once you have hosed everything down wash as normal ( top to bottom, again using a ton of soap with the water in your bucket). After washing and rinsing don't towel dry the car as there is no protect-ant on the paint and you could leave swirl marks on the paint, you can dry with a leaf blower or shop vac on blow if you want to but, it really isn't important as whatever water spots do end up on the paint won't have time to set in since you will be claybaring next.

Now that you have washed your car start claybaring, there is no need to press really firm, just make sure you turn and roll the clay over often so you have a clean surface to work with, any contaminants the clay picks up can end up leaving little scratches if you don't. Make sure you use some kind of lubricant between the clay and the paint or the clay will stick to the paint and it will be less effective and leave clay residue everywhere. Most clay bar "systems" like Mother's or other higher end brands will sell the clay and some kind of spray to go with it just for this purpose. You can clay your windows to if you want, I use a 50/50 water white vinegar mix on the windows the vinegar really helps the clay get the glass really clean.

Once you are done claybaring wipe down the car with a spray on wash (nothing with wax in it just a wash) be extremely gentle when doing this as you run the risk of swirls marks since there will be no protect-ant on the paint, this will get all the clay residue off. Then stand in your garage rubbing your paint for about an hour because it feels so smooth. I usually do this with my pants off and the garage closed but it's your call. After you get done rubbing the paint wipe off whatever smudges you left on the paint with the spray on wash.

Next you can polish the car if you want to, and if you hate yourself, because polishing sucks giant balls. I only polished blacktruck because I took him to a dealership for an oil change and they were kind enough to run him through their shitty car wash and covered him in swirl marks. Remember when you are polishing don't press on the buffer let the speed of the buffer and the polish do the work. SERIOUSLY YOU CAN FUCK UP YOUR PAINT PRETTY EASILY IF YOU GET TOO EXCITED POLISHING. Also, I put masking tape on all the trim and window edges while I am polishing so it doesn't end up in places I don't want it, like weatherstripping, in the gaps in emblems or, on black plastic trim if your car has any. When you are done polishing or, in between compounds if you are doing more than type of compound, wipe the car down with the spray wash to get all of the polish off again being gentle to avoid swirl marks.

Next wax as normal (small sections blah blah blah) if the wax dries and is hard to get off after it hazes I usually spray it with spray on wax and hit it with the buffer again it will get the dried wax off really easily. If you don't want to do that water and a microfiber towel work fine. After you think you are done double check for anymore dried on wax, there will be some.

Remember don't do any of this in direct sunlight and only use quality microfiber towels.

If you made it this far you deserve a picture of a C4. Here is my 93 with original 20 year old paint that i manage to get back to almost perfection.

not bad! I'll probably clay bar my car while I'm at it. I've never waxed by hand before so that should be a fun experience. The color of my car is relatively easy to keep clean but when it's REALLY CLEAN it looks amazing.

I have owned 3 black cars because I am an idiot. They look great amazing clean but they are a bitch to keep that way. Chamois is a type of leather that is very gentle but, porous and absorbent. They are great for drying your car after you wash it.

The chamios will be more absorbent than a microfiber towel and you can wring most of the water out as you go so, they are kind of better than microfiber. They are totally reusable, Just wring them out and hang up to dry. If you soak it and wring it out, so it is damp, before you start drying it will be much easier to use they get extremely stiff when they are dry (especially the synthetic ones) so it is kind of a bitch starting out. I usually use my shop vac to dry though, it is a lot easier to get all the water out of places like the mirrors and door jambs and it doesn't take nearly as long.

Oh ya, I forgot to post this above but, once you get a nice coat of wax on the car you can usually just wipe it down with spray wash and microfiber towels every few days instead of doing a full wash when ever it gets dirty. And the above process takes a while especially if you are polishing. I usually plan on not being able to drive the vehicle for a couple of days just to make sure I have enough time.

Do you use a DA or a rotary polisher? I heard it's nearly impossible to burn through the paint with the DA since it is clutch activated and will simply stop spinning if you put too much pressure into it. I just picked up the DA from Harbor Freight after much research, and have my pads and compound, IronX, clay, and Collinite wax coming in from amazon on Tuesday. Will do my car and my parents' minivan.

I use a DA, I have heard that too but I am always careful anyway. I look at it this way, if I burn the paint/clearcoat it is going to be super expensive to fix so, I take no chances. If I can't get something out I will use stronger polish or just make multiple passes concentrating on the area I am trying to fix, to me better safe than expensive to fix.
