Thin gauge metal + shitty rusty base metal to weld to (didn't want to cut up a body line) + inexperience = ugly patches. The metal I made my patches of was some galvonized thin gauge steel I got for free, I should have just gone out and bought good steel. Everything should clean up nicely though with some finishing putty, block sanding, and a coat of textured bed liner on the lower portion of the body.
Future plans for the truck include flat black SS stripes on the hood and tail gate, drop spindles when I need to replace some front suspension bits, and maybe an upgrade to 4th gen F-body seats or leather seats out of a higher spec version of my truck.

Funny how sometimes, free can be expensive... Anyway, have you had a chance to get the T/A sorted and figure out what the carb flamethrower was?

Not to bad, really, and that's coming from another inexperience welder

I've given up. A mechanic down the road from my house is coming over to diagnose the problem and will tell me if it seems like a major or minor problem and give an estimation on how long/how much it will cost to fix at his shop. Hopefully it's just something minor.
I was going to have a mechanic tune the car for performance anyway so I'll have the guy (he owns a performance shop) tune it at his shop since the car will be there anyway.

Did you consider buying a small rocker panel portion? Could've cut out the bad corner and welded in a new section. Just sayin.

I couldn't get either of my welders (mig and arc) down to a temp low enough not to burn through the steel. It's pretty sketchy.

Not bad. Its cool that your fixing it. Do you live in that part of thr country where metal turns into dust after a few years?

needs more zip ties.

yeah but the panels would cost $120... Not worth it for a beater daily driver truck. I'd rather spend that cash on my T/A

I live in northern central Indiana, rust is an issue but I'm attributing this current problem to shitty GM design and a poor repair by a previous owner.

I live in TX, you can pluck a car sitting in a field for 30 years. And not a spec of rust anywhere. Im always shocked by some of the cars I see that stop in my shop that are traveling through. Heres a van thats just a few years old. Took this pic a few days ago.

welding galvanized. Good thing you were outside, that shit gets toxic when turned into a gas.

God job fixing it on your own. Who cares if it isn't that pretty. But welding galvanized is a bad idea. If I have to do it, even outside, I wear a respirator with pre-filters and charcoal filters. It isn't perfect but it's better than nothing.

I grinded off the galvanizing where I was welding, wasn't too bad.

I assume my friend's Aveo will look like this soon. It's used to Southern Indiana.

Be careful man: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Metal_fum…
We lost an older family friend long ago because he was welding using some leftover sheet.
Try to use non-galvanized when you can. If you have to use it, always grind off more than you need to. Always.
