While looking in my engine bay (2001 Acura Cl Type S) for a broken cruise control cable I found this cable that's unattached to a crimp. As you can see, the cable is attached to the metal of the engine bay. It's rusted off and broken from the crimp which is attached to some sort of plug and some cylindrical device, all located on the side of my engine underneath the air intake.

It looks like some sort of ground cable, but I really have no idea what it's for or how important it is.

I've attached a bunch of pictures.

Anyone have any idea what this is for and how important it is? I'm asking on the Acurazine forums as well but the member base there is petering out, so responses don't always come very quickly.

That definitely looks like a ground strap. So it would be in you best interest to fix it.

That's what it looks to be. I've had an evap systems leak CEL code for a few months now. I'm wondering if this is somehow related. Most likely not.

You never know. Weird shit = bad ground. Evap code could be something simple as replacing the gas cap.

The car has a separate CEL code for the gas cap. This isn't it. The code I have is P1457, gas cap is P1456.

Replace it as soon as you can. A loose ground can cause blown circuits. Had one blow a fusible link on me once..... Upgrade if possible. I have these now....

the red wire is size 2 AWG for comparison. Gonna put a couple in my other cars as well.

Other than durability, is there any point to having an excessively thick ground cable? I'm assuming my cable has been broken for at most 2 years, though possibly longer. That would mean it lasted 12 years.

Considering that the grounds I had were marginal from the factory, and one about the size of the one you depicted broke thus causing hell within my electrical system, I would say yes, especially considering that I had a long standing quirk disappear from my vehicle with these new ones.....
