Factory Five Cobra: Update #3

Time for yet another Cobra update…hopefully people are still finding these interesting. Since the last post we got the rear end shipped and began the copious amounts of work required to prep it for installation. These rear ends are refurbished (my guess is that they are off an early Fox body mustang) by a company separate from Factory Five and I must say, I was unimpressed with the quality. Rust pitting can be seen through the powder coat, leading me to believe they just painted right over all of it. Additionally, some of the brackets were welded slightly off center which ended up being a major pain in the ass. Granted, no one will be seeing this piece once the car is all done, but it still irritates me. Here it is will the axles installed and ready to be put on the car.

Hoisting this thing up onto the car took us about a combined 3 days. Here it is post-installation and with the rear shocks mounted:

Our next step is installing the steering rack and then running all the plumbing in the car. We ordered this triple reservoir system below in order to keep the front and rear brakes on two separate systems and a third for our hydraulic clutch. I am currently obsessed with the machining on this, maybe you will be too. The last big piece of news that I have is that we finally ordered our powerplant: 5.0L Coyote Engine from Ford Racing. We expect to take delivery in roughly a week so I will be sure to post more pics. More to come and Happy 4th.

Actually, a majority of 427 replicas are fitted with 5.0 Coyotes (or 351s)...

I have only seen three. Two were 427s and the other was a 289. My neighbor had one too, another 427! Now, I don't look to much into this stuff, but I have never seen a 351 Cobra or a 5L one, so I am only going off experience here.

I have seen some 427s with actual 427FEs in them. Replicas with 289 cid engines seem rather uncommon though. Usually owners tend to just go with 302s.

I don't know if the 289 was replica or the real deal. There was a guy at the car show that lost his mind when he saw the car, I came to check it out too, sounded awesome!

Looking good.. If I may offer a little advice. My father and I built a ffr with a solid rear axle and when it came time to service the rear diff. It was a bitch due to clearance with the pan hard bar. Before you get too far. You should look into a diff cover that has a drain plug in it. I promise. Best money ever spent. We got ours at a 4x4 performance shop. If you haven't gone on the FFR builder website you should give it a gander. Either way keep the articles coming I love em.

Yeah it was. Unfortunately we only found out after we had all the aluminum panels riveted in. So we had to basically remove the rear end assy. To install it. But after that,was so much easier to drain and fill without any real mess.
