I believe it I used to take my Legacy camping all the time. Same with friends and family's Subaru's.

And you can store stuff and/or sleep in the back.

Sadly mine is a sedan. A wagon or forester would be a killer camping car. (Runs off to craigslist)

I have a pre-'08 Outback. Lots of room. That is why I keep it in good shape. I can tell you where most of the dings, dents and scrapes came from.

But can I take one mudding with my buddies in their trucks?

Sadly I still haven't taken my XV offroad yet, even though I've owned it for over a year. I have yet to find a place to get it nice and dirty.

I believe it too. My '01 Outback sees regular off-pavement use hauling bikes & trailbuilding materials, and never complains. Of course, it does leak oil...
I only wish it had a shorter 1st gear, it's really hard to start on big inclines when it's loaded up because the engine really doesn't have much torque or response down low.

self reported off pavement use? that sounds about right. i had an 05 forester xt and off pavement it was great. off road? not so much

I take my LGT offroad every chance I get. And I race it. And pretty much use it for everything. And the WORLDRALLYBRO in my neighborhood wonders why I make fun of his stanced WRX.

Sure, err, no. The big problem with the Subaru is exactly what you see in the picture. They have way too much front overhang. But all in all I can't really bitch about the capability of the breed. Mudding is best left to trucks.

Most of my off road is kinda unintentional. Out exploring a Forest Rd. and find some interesting thing to sidetrack you. Still, you have to be aware of its front overhang or you can do some body altering.

The plus side is you will never get lost with a trail of oil to point you back where you came from. :)

All the more reason for an off-road capable sporty performance rally car.
XV Crosstrek + WRX STI drivetrain + FA20DIT engine.

Most of my "off pavement" consists of following trails in the loose sand. It is exceptional for that. Great balanced weight F/R compared to my truck. And Forest roads. You just have to remember that the rock you would just drive over in the truck may need to be moved or avoided in the Subaru. It will not replace a Jeep or a decent truck, but it comes close.

When it comes to fire roads and soft surfaces I agree, the Forester was a blast. I think this study mostly refers to taking it off pavement in the sense that you take the subi a few a mile to the trailhead kind of thing.
