Well here in the Northwest, we have this thing called the Subaru tax. Basically everyone in our zero-snow (ok maybe once very 5 years or so) climate has been very effectively brainwashed into thinking that they NEED awd. This leads to Subaru dealers charging huge premiums and it keeps used prices high as well.
That being said, I'd give about $450 after Subaru tax.

I will say I've never seen one that old. Here in the Midwest old Japanese cars (pre 1992) are EXTREMELY rare.

Is that just because of something like road salt? Out here they are a dime a dozen, I've owned two early 80's Japanese beaters ('85 Corolla and '83 Isuzu Trooper) both are probably still on the road today.

We have that in the northeast too, it's unfortunate. On the flip side, it worked out in my favor when in college I got my parent's hand me down outback, which later got totaled. The payout on that was almost as high as my parents had payed for the car when they got it! I just bought a saab 92x to try and sneak by the subaru tax, but even those are going up around here as people realize what they are.

What you have got to do is go for obscure AWD platforms. If I had my current choice of (inexpensive) platforms it would probably be the Suzuki SX4.

Yeah, honestly I never gave them much thought although my sister's boyfriend was talking about getting one right when I bought my car. I still think in a couple years it might be fun to pick one up for a cheap beater, but I went the subie route because there are just so many easy to get parts around here for it. Also, I've seen a ton of sx4's on the road around here, and all but one were driven by girls. Lots of them seem to have fuzzy animal print seat covers and the like...

LOL, I could say the same thing about Miatas and Minis being driven almost exclusively by women around here! Something tells me that with a few choice modifications that little Suzuki would be a rallycross monster.

Yeah I mean I would still buy one and hoon it no problem, it was just an observation. The real reason was I wanted a platform to learn and get into doing some mods on, and I figured a Subaru would be an easier entry point into that than the Suzuki given immense amount of Subie fans around here. Also while I'm a big fan of small cars, my previous car was an MK4 GTI and I wanted another hatch but with a *little* more room in the back this time. I've now slept in the back at two bluegrass festivals and two rallies, and I tell you it's a handy feature. I've never been in an SX4 but I have to guess it would be a little cramped for that...
