so this morning, the power seat on my newly purchased $10 volvo 850 turbo decided that it did not want to unrecline. It will recline further using the power switch, but won't go back up. Does anyone have ideas on how to fix this myself?

I tried, and it wouldn't go back up.

Yours is a '94, right? If so, the built-in diagnostics might be able to point you towards the problem: http://www.volvoclub.org.uk/tech/service/8…

The full set of documents is available at http://www.volvoclub.org.uk/volvo_workshop… . Really useful information.

Also, if your car is equipped with side airbags, you'll want to disarm them before poking around the seat area – the side airbag system is entirely mechanical, and active at all times. There should be an orange plastic piece clipped inside the seat trim. Slide it over the round airbag detonator on the front corner of the seat to make it safe.

My car is a 1994. This seems super useful thanks a ton.

Also, mine is not equipped with side airbags. I think I'm gonna keep an eye on my local junkyard for a 1998 s70 or v70 so I can get a newer drivers seat and a side airbag.

You might be able to cast your net wider than that – my '96 850R has side airbags, so at least some 850s got them.

Thinking about it a bit more, if the motor doesn't run at all when you try to unrecline it, I'd put my money on it either being the switch, or the contacts inside the control unit – after all, if it goes one way but not the other, the motor and drive system is likely fine.

You should be able to borrow the switch unit from the passenger's side to test with, otherwise, try cleaning the relay contacts inside the control unit (black box under the seat).

I had to remove the driver's seat on mine a while back – the connectors on the control unit are a bit tricky – they have tiny release tabs that are easy to miss, so just yanking on the plugs won't get you anywhere.

Do you know if the recliner is a separate cable from the seat bottom. I did have a cable unplug from the bottom of the seat, but I plugged it back in.

Also, I prefer the s70 seat design to that of the regular 850 now if I Could get an 850 r seat I'd pick it up for sure.

If I recall correctly, on the front edge of the control module, you've got a power input connector, and another one going to the switch unit. On the back edge, there are two much larger plugs – according to the wiring diagrams, the grey one is for the backrest, while the black one is for everything else. If one of those were unplugged, though, you'd lose both directions for the affected motor(s), rather than just one.

I have a couple of 2-pin plugs dangling under the driver's seat on mine. I think that they might be for the seat heater (which doesn't work), but I can't be sure. The power function works fine without them, though.
