Actually, thats pretty impressive.
Reading bandits review on the traverse had me looking into their capabilities for kicks and giggles and I have to say...its pretty impressive. You get 115 cubic feet of cargo space compared to 95 with the similar wheelbase (but wider) Tahoe. You Also get 288 hp and 270 ft-lbs from V6 (with dual exhaust), 5200 lbs of towing which is not that bad really, and the kicker? over 1600 lbs of load capacity. As a reference, the curb weight, GVRW and towing are exactly in line with my FZJ80 land cruiser and that thing can carry a load. Given that people are reporting real world average mileage at 20 mpg combined...that's really not bad at all. Well done GM on giving the world an affordable, large family crossover with real utility.

The only reason I can think of buying the Tahoe over this is off-road ability, but does the Tahoe even do that well anymore?

nope, they are not...though they do come with the g80 locking rear diff as standard now at least so they could be made to go off road. The only reason in my mind to get a Tahoe still exists; 8300 lbs of towing and a 7300 lbs GVRW. They haven't published the curb weights though so it may not boil down to much. At the end of the day the choice comes down to the size of trailer you want to pull. EDIT: people are guessing 5600 lbs for the 4wd tahoe, which means that you only get less than 100 lbs extra load over the traverse...so yeah, its the size of the trailer.

I traded our Enclave (same platform) in a couple months back. We loved it.

My brother has an enclave, its a nice ride. Why trade it in and for what?

Also, Looking into it, a Tahoe is $17000! more than similarly equipped Traverse. Dayum.

But people still buy the Tahoe because it's a big-wig car. Buy one, and people think you've made it. Buy this, and people think you're still stuck in middle management and can't afford a Tahoe

8,300 lbs towing sounds pitiful for a full-size body-on-frame vehicle.

I loved this car for its shape and how well those wheels worked on the shape and I was content with the old design until they updated the face and made it look even better.

Ironically, if you wait a year or two your "big wig" Tahoe is priced at your middle management traverse so the point is moot, or at we can say that people who make such assumptions are generally idiots. I like the idea of the Tahoe more but if you actually compare them...apples to apples...its a hard sell.

meh, its not that bad. two decades ago you had to get a 3/4 ton to get 8000 lbs towing, I think we are just jaded. our 1997 k2500 suburban with the 3.83 final and Vortec 454 could only tow 8000 lbs. Lets call it progress that you can do it with a much smaller engine that get better mileage.

I think the Tahoe just needs more Duramax

It was seven years old, 99,700 miles. Traded it in for an Expedition Limited that is loaded to the gills. It was my wife's call.

I completely agree with you, but I've seen a number of new Escalades and Tahoes on the streets, and it's all about people's image.
