I need to stop reading urban eco hipsters opinions on city planning from newspapers. The basic premise in every story is that central area of the city can be crammed with hundreds of thousands of more people 'because everyone who wants to live in the capitol must be able to do so and they must be able to do so as close as center as possible because it's hip' while prohibiting cars in the area because ''who needs cars anyway, there's nothing to see beyond the metro area anyway''.

My problem with that is that most of these ideas are pretty out of touch with reality and that these people are mostly just narrow minded and lack common sense. Also, somehow people like this have been elected to city council which means that some of these ideas like 'massive bridges in the middle of city archipelago for couple tram lines' are closer to reality than they should be, especially when the city should be saving money instead of blowing it into useless and downright landscape ruining projects.

Then there are also multiple different projects going on that should bring more apartments for people moving in. I understand that the city grows but the planners are trying to make this city a new (insert a hip metropolis here) or something. Why try to make a copy of something existing when you could make something unique? We have space you don't have to cram all the possible places full of buildings. You even acquired more land from the neighboring city, why don't you build there?

Wow, this became a lot longer than I intended. Maybe I just have completely different idea what an ideal city is compared to most of my generation. Anyways I want to thank you and apologize for wasting your time if you had the patience to read through all that unplanned rambling.

In terms of people moving to the city centre, they are right. Land prices towards the centre of cities have reached sky high as of recent due to high demand, since it really is the "hip" thing to do, moving to a big and vibrant city such as New York. Rising populations mean that cities really do have to expand to accommodate them. Urban sprawl occurs because of this, a process by which housing quite literally spills out from the city. The reason why governments are trying to confine everyone to the city itself is to prevent the city encroaching onto green, untouched land. However, urban planning, if done right, can be very beneficial to the local area since many things, from congestion to environmental quality can be improved.

Regarding cars in cities though, everyone should just take a leaf out of Japan's book and start using kei cars. They are so small and compact, yet they fit easily into small gaps where normal trucks just can't got. Imagine the fuel savings and congestion benefits a city could experience if everyone migrated to smaller cars, especially if they're the hip and trendy type that rarely goes beyond the inner city.

I agree with you. I ranted about building new apartments mainly because many of the currently planned projects would hurt or completely remove recreational areas and landscapes which, I think, are quite unique to this particular city.

About kei cars. They would probably work in many places but not everywhere. For example here the congestion is pretty laughable compared to most European capitals and most of the people who never leave the city don't own a car to begin with making it pretty hard to market little cars with not much power in a country where population density is 17.6 people per square km.

Let the hipsters all cluster together. It'll be easier to get rid of them in the future...

Ah yes of course, the destruction of recreational green areas in cities is quite significant. I see what you mean. As far as I can see then, to prevent the destruction of green spaces, populations in the city will either have to find a way to expand their current tower blocks, or man up and move elsewhere.

And of course, kei cars work best in congested cities with properly limited space. That's why in Hong Kong, I consider the Smart to be a great car, although I understand how in the USA where land is much wider and flatter the Smart would be quite redundant.

Also, they'll be collected nicely and trapped for the zombies. Zombies gotta eat, same as worms.
