I agree with this. Nothing should done to alter the look of your licence plate or hinder the appearance or viewable area of the licence plate.

it will help people actually read your plate.

In Ohio, plate covers are actually illegal because the license plate reflectivity per square inch cannot be modified. But plate frames are fine

Plate frames are legal in the U.K. but some do come a little close to being illegal.

The majority of U.K. drivers/owners don't use frames or surrounds but use the flag/national marker to the left to individualise them instead.

British cars are exempt from having a compulsory E.U. flag on the licence plate and can display any flag on the union or nation within it. It does have to comply with font, letter size, spacing and England and Wales licence plates must have the post-code (zip-code) of where the licence plate was made (not sure about Scotland and Northern Ireland).

If however your licence plate doesn't have a national identifier then when going abroad you must put a sticker on.
