This past Sunday Wilzig Racing Manor in West Taghkanic, NY hosted an event to raise money for a local camp that caters to a very special group of kids. In neighboring Craryville, Camp Sundown plays host every summer to young kids afflicted with Xeroderma Pigmentosum. XP is a very rare genetic disorder which affects the body's ability to repair cell damage from UV light; in extreme cases all exposure to sunlight must be avoided. Sadly, fewer than 40 percent of those afflicted survive past age 20.
Alan Wilzig hosted the Driving Force Club at WRM, and this year's turnout was outstanding. Alan's association with Camp Sundown began a few years back after meeting its founder Dan Mahar, whose own daughter is afflicted with XP. Camp Sundown had been operating on a shoestring budget, with Dan and his wife Caren covering expenses. Smaller events at WRM in 2011 and 2012 helped provide operating cash for the camp, but things really got rolling (so to speak) in 2013 when Alan's associate Dan Sperling took over organizing duties. The proof is in the results: last year's event raised over $16,000 for Camp Sundown's operations, but this year's take has been over $41,000 thanks to the strong turnout and overwhelming generosity of several of the club members.
Driving Force Club owners came from as far away as New Jersey and Long Island, NY. A veritable Who's Who in exotic sports cars, virtually all makes were represented on Sunday - Lamborghini, Ferrari, Mosler, Ultima, and McLaren. A Bugatti Veyron and SSC Aero were in attendance as well.
The license plate on this Mosler reads "240MPH". Yikes.
Some Jalopnik readers might recognize this as Bryan Salamone's Aventador.
Peter Huber from WRM drove the 370Z safety car, and lead the owners in groups around the track for many hot laps.
An exotic car rainbow? This could be a poster hanging in a kid's room.
SSC Aero, Mosler MT900 and Veyron. One seriously fast lineup.
More hot laps following Peter in the WRM safety car.
Alan and Karin Wilzig, Dan Sperling (in the Camp Sundown shirt).

Thanks Patrick, much obliged.

in this context, what is a "hot lap"? These look like parade laps.
![]() 07/03/2014 at 10:50 |
|
Normally when Alan has guests on the track they are parade laps, but this time around the owners were allowed to get on it a bit. Peter got quite a workout driving the safety car - nobody wants to be "that guy" who spun off the track at an event like this because he overcooked it in a corner.

Glad it went well. I was supposed to shoot the day with my Phantom 2 but couldn't make it. Next year I'll be there with a Phantom 2 and a C7Z06. :)

I hope to see you there Gene. Hell, maybe I'll get an invite :)

So wait, they are having a fundraiser for kids who can't be out in the sun by holding an event on a sunny day outside at the track? Shouldn't they have like an indoor arena even that the kids can see the cars?
![]() 07/03/2014 at 11:04 |
|
We didn't have any pictures of sick kids, so here are some rich people with expensive cars and women with fake boobies.

Was this event open to the public? It would've been great to know about this ahead of time! (Sorry if you did post about it and I just didn't see it)
![]() 07/03/2014 at 11:14 |

Not having to rent an indoor arena meant all the proceeds went to the kids' camp.

Somewhat. It was open to members of the Driving Force Club.

Is anyone else saddened by the fact that they only contributed $40k. I know it's not my money and cars, but they have more than $40k in wheel options alone between these cars. That's an understatement too.

Alan's an old friend, dating back to an ancient motorcycle related email list. He's a decent fellow who's living a life any of us would be happy to live. A gearhead through and through. The world could use more people like Alan and Karin. Simple as that.

Although there might be more issues with insurance and logistics, but I think a public event would do a fantastic job of spreading the word and also bringing in exponentially more money. Maybe next year?

I'm saddened by the fact that a previous car group "starts with an F, ends in rarri" came up in 2012 and raised a dismal <$5,000, until I stepped in with DFC.
If it wasn't for DFC - Camp Sundown would be struggling significantly to get by, my friend.

You kicked serious behind setting all this up Dan. I knew money would be raised, but the turnout and end result was nothing short of phenomenal. Some of the nicest people around coming together with their eye-catching rides for a great cause. It's a win-win-win situation :)

Why did they let that sweatshop owner Ben Chen in there. Taking his money is so wrong. His family owns sweatshops and patents to shoes in china. Blood and sweat money.

I apologize for my brash language and dickish assumptions. I was merely trying to point out that while I'm sure the owners of the awesome cars are wonderful charitable people, this article shouldn't be about them, it should be about the charity that brought them there in the first place.

Driving Force as a club and as individuals support 100 different charities. I support 50 different charities. This was 5 hrs of fun that paid for an entire year's expenses for a tiny camp that happens to be a mile away from me. Those children with XP suffer and die in obscurity. $40K means the world to www.XPs.org please don't diminish the largesse of the group or the volunteers who made it happen. thanks.

There was a cute Mini Cooper. It was DFC-related not dollar-related. I think the club president has a Gti (not GT-R)

Well , you have a good eye. But if you check my Facebook page you see she had the same boobies 24 years ago. But now she's 44 with 2 children so what she does to keep her boobies as perky as they had always been , is really up to her and in no way relevant to the conversation. The children come AT NIGHT and sit on bikes and in cars and take pictures. They cannot go out in the sun. If you want to see pictures of children whose faces are scarred with 12 skin cancer operations & grafts ; who look like their faces were blowtorched and put back together 50 times : visit www.XPS.org . Otherwise feel free to make gratuitous and implicitly derogatory remarks about my wife's tits. What charitable event did you spend the last 2 months planning for last weekend ? Moreover , what does your wife's tits look like ?
![]() 07/05/2014 at 01:09 |

Sorry I hadn't seen your polite reply before writing my rebuke. Apologies. The goal was to drive folks to go check out www.XPs.org AND to cover their expenses for the year. Just the fact that we accomplished the latter and here we are disussing www.Xps.org even for TWO SECONDS , means the event set out what it had intended. Sorry again about the snippy retort. I make boobie-remarks ALL THE TIME. ( it doesn't make us bad people ; just male & observant)

Discretion doesn't help bring attention to REALLY little-known , but awful , maladies. We could have worn potato sacks and driven our family SUV's ; but then it wouldn't be on Jalopnik. So it is what it is. It was 5hrs for a great cause with nice people.

I've been Googling for a YEAR and could not find out how he got all those cars. I figured someone owned a CASINO in Macau or something. No one was specifically invited. A car club and it's affiliates were told of the event and welcomed to come. All I cared about was meeting the camp's goals and making sure everyone had a safe fun time. My father was a sweatshop worker here int he US pressing bow-ties in the 40's. I'm not a big fan of them , personally. How do you KNOW that , anyway ?

Elise Crawdad Says, "Plain disgusting". Isn't it convenient when you are able to sit atop your high horse and dictate what should be given and to whom should. Especially when you are spending the money of OTHERS. this is PURE jealousy on your part. One question, HOW MUCH did YOU DONATE to others this last month? Hell how 'bout this last YEAR? My bet is somewhere between ZERO and $50 bucks. so you can easily to tisk tisk the Wilzigs for doing something and giving it away. Alan is an extremely kind and generous man when it comes to helping others with a gift fat grater than you'll ever be able give. I'll wager that Alan and Karin have written MUCH bigger single checks than you've givin to others you've given in YOUR WHOLE life. Take your "disgusting" comment wad it up and shove it up your butt! (the gerbil up there would probably enjoy a nice new nest).
You always find it so easy to give much more when you are holding another man's wallet. The only thing disgusting about this event are the opinions of the Jealous! Now try it holding your own wallet and then become the judge. You are no more than a jealous miser and a complete farce YOU are the one who's Plain Disgusting not Alan and Karin. THEY are incredible people with hearts the size of Texas and as soft as as a bunny rabit. Alan and Karin don't seem to aspire to anything additional than to be kind loving people who love their family and one another. The only way to sum this up is you are a self-serving dumbass who fits neatly into the that roll. You couldn't possibly get any worse.

Good god, another new account, this one with the idiotic "jealousy" red herring.
And some weird ad hominem garbage, too. Funny that a bunch of supposed friends of Wilzig came online last night and got defensive. What a coincidence!
I could donate more to charity than I do if I was born on third base, too. It'd be interesting to compare donations vs income/net worth and tax deductions claimed for such. I doubt Alan approves of your material.

elise is really a sweet woman from Nola . We both have our own special needs kids we both raise chickens she's salt of the earth. But she didn't have the opportunity to attend Exeter & Harvard . I would bet my left nut (or my wife's aforementioned) surgically enhanced almost otherworldly , left breast : if Miss Buss meant any harm. She's a lovely woman this isn't "PR fuck-you awww look how cute he defends his detractor" BULLSHIT. She just has an eccentric sense of humor and the double-entendre was just a poorly received attempted lighthearted joke because we wouldn't be here chatting if the cars were AT ALL PLAIN ! Or I could be wrong and it was a total dicky remark. But u eally don't think so !

Eh, I was going to ignore you, hoping that the real Alan Wilzig would carry himself better than this. Maybe not. You have time. Do some work and find it yourself, or hire someone to do the work. Also, get some sleep.
Hint: His PARENTS own the Pou Chen Group. He's never earned shit in his life. Regarding the link, good luck with that request. At the very least, charge him a big entrance fee, donate the proceeds. His parents can afford it.
And seriously, if you are the real you, I wish your charity luck. Don't take everything here personally. Especially when some characters are involved.
