My girlfriend studied abroad a semester there and loved it. She brought back this stuff, I don't know how it was spelled but it was pronounced rock-ee-yuh or something, I think it was plum brandy. That stuff takes some balls and an iron gut to keep down!

Yup! Rakija is how it's spelled. It's a fruity alcoholic beverage that everyone loves over there! A good number of people actually make their own! The one you had was sljivovica, or the Plum variety. That's the most common one to find. It can be made using many different fruits, like apricots, peaches, pears etc.

That sounds about right. She stayed in Novi Belgrade(?) while she was there. She always sent me pictures of Yugos because they look kinda like mk1 golfs

Yup Novi Beograd (or New Belgrade) is the Northern half of the city. Most of it's newer (read: soviet era) buildings, called "blocks". I grew up in Old Belgrade, but am very familiar with the area :)
