After some prodigious research, I get the feeling it'll be cheaper easier for me to rip out the stock AC components from my '82 GTV6 and do a clean Vintage Air install than try to diagnose and repair the stock system, which allegedly works like crap even in the best circumstances.
I've heard the Mini Gen II evaporator unit fits inside the GTV6's "box" with some bracket fabrication and the controls can even be modified to use the stock knobs and sliders (or just install the VA unit somewhere relatively inconspicuous).
I need to replace the compressor and drier regardless, and a new condenser would probably be a good idea as well. Most of those parts can be procured on fleabay. Then it's just hoses and fittings at pretty much any AC shop. Right? Some of the guys on the board claim doing your own hoses isn't THAt hard as long as you have the correct crimping tool.
I dunno. Still sound slike $2500 at least. Am I willing to put that kind of money into a car that I still wouldn't DD? Granted, it's bloody HOT in Austin for 9 or 10 months a year.
I'd love to hear some stories about repairing or replacing AC systems. I have next to no experience working on them, but I've been reading a ton and I'm at the least getting a better understanding of how they work. Really, not as complicated as I originally thought.
