Update on July 24, 2014
Update on June 30, 2014: This is now the longest infographic in history. Unofficially, of course.
GM has recalled over 13 million vehicles and 35 models over 24 million vehicles and 53 models over 25 million vehicles and 55 models in the US in 2014. As you might recall (HA!), !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! in five years. Recall information is scattered across the web so we wanted to make an easy-to-digest infographic with the number of models and parts being recalled along with the announcement date of each recall. It's a prettier way of looking at the ugliness of GM's recalls.

Why are they even bothering recalling stuff like the 98-02 Alero? The warranties must have already expired by now and Olds has been out of business for a decade.

Good question. At least the the R.E. Olds Transportation Museum can add a new exhibit! It's gotten a little stale over there. http://reoldsmuseum.org/

Because they have to. All warranties, contracts, TSBs and Recalls have to be honored for [insert timeframe here]. Since it's just a rebadged Grand Am, sharing 90% of its parts, it's covered under the ignition recall as well. Since the Grand Am (and subsequently the Alero) shares its platform and majority components with the 1997-2005 Chevy Malibu/Classic, there's the open door to a currently operating brand.

I always wanted to go there. Olds has always been my favorite GM division.
They are recalling things into the late 90s, which seems a bit ridiculous. Almost all of those cars have changed owners by now and none of them are kept on GM dealerships around here. I only ever see them in the sketchy second hand dealers.
I can turn the ignition off in my 72 Cutlass with my knee if it sit funny. Do I get a recall too?

The PassKey II system has been flawed since day one, with the majority of owners bypassing the system entirely just to keep their car starting. As someone whose sold these hunks of composite materials both new and used, I'm glad GM is finally doing something about it.

That's ridiculous.
Their warranties surely must have expired by now.
Almost all those cars from that year range have changed owners by now and are secondhand. I haven't seen any GM dealership around here that has even bothered to display them in the trade-in section. They've all but been forgotten. If they do show up in a dealer, it's always in those sketchy secondhand places.

Okay did a bit of googling, and here we go:
In order to be eligible for a free remedy, the vehicle cannot be more than 10 years old on the date the defect or noncompliance is determined.
- NHTSA
Which brings this into a grey point. The defect was technically determined as early as 2001 which means, if persuaded, GM could possibly recall every PassKey-III equipped vehicle as long as they were found to have the same defect as other models.

Yup. I think they're now stuck in the "Well let's just fix every goddamn thing so nobody can bitch anymore!" mindset

I'd like to see this info for every major manufacturer, shown against total number of vehicles sold.. Just to see who are the worst culprits.

This chart forgets 303,000 2009 to 2014 Chevrolet express vans for passenger side dashboard. They installed some... little bump because a moron without their seatbelt on sitting in the front passenger seat could get hurt in an accident. It's basically just a stupid little tray about 2 inches deep and 18 inches wide attached to the dashboard.

Seems it would be a lot easier to make a chart of the models from the last decade or so that HAVEN'T been recalled this year.
So far, the only ones I can think of are the Colorado/Canyon/I-Series, 04-06 GTO, G8, U-Body minivans, and the final generation Oldsmobile Aurora.

Ah, yes. The GM-era Hummers. Forgot to mention the H3, especially, since it's based on the Colorado/Canyon/I-Series.
Saturn S-Series and L-Series.
GM compact trucks/SUVs (S-10, Sonoma, Hombre, Blazer, Jimmy, along with the early Blazer/Jimmy based TrailBlazer/Envoy).
Chevrolet Tracker and related Suzuki Vitara/Grand Vitara.

Wow. I'm appalled that they waited so long for some of these. I knew about their ignition switch woes years ago (not for this exact issue) even though I've never worked for GM. I've replaced plenty of ignition switches because they were such pieces of shit, and in vehicles going back to the early 90's. I've also replaced enough 04-06 electric steering columns fresh out of warranty to have known those were garbage too. I would be surprised if they don't expand the ignition switch recalls further in coming months. What's next? Front wheel bearings/hub units on all FWD cars model year '97 and newer because they can wear and cause loss of vehicle control and/or because the integrated wheel speed sensor can fail and cause the ABS/TC/ESP systems to become inoperative increasing the likely hood of an accident?
