So, I haven't posted an update on the E21 for a while because I've been waiting for parts to come in, and work and autocross have eaten a lot of my weekends. This past weekend was great because I had neither, and plenty of time to work on the car.

First thing I did was replace the dry-rotted trunk seal - I've been having to bail water out of the trunk every time it rains. Easy fix, took maybe 10 minutes. Next, replacing electrical bits. I took everything out of the fusebox and wirebrushed the connectors - I'd pulled the relays a while back and tested to see which ones were still good. The fuel pump relay literally came apart when I pulled it, so that one obviously needed replacing, but about half the rest still tested good. Put in all new fuses, closed everything up, and started the car. It starts up just fine, but now it won't turn off - I can turn the switch off, pull the key out, and it'll carry on running and driving until I pop the secondary fuse to the fuel pump. I tried putting all the old fuses/relays back in, even popped the old fuel pump relay back together and put it back in - same thing.

My assumption is that it's something to do with the ignition switch, so I consult the great and powerful Haynes manual, which says I need to pull the steering wheel. Shouldn't be an issue, it's held on by a single lock nut and doesn't appear to require any major intervention.

There's just one problem. Some idiot has put threadlocker on the damn nut. Don't think it was the previous owner, because it looks like it's been there for years - but it's gone white so I can't tell which kind it was. I'm praying it wasn't red because I really don't want to take a blowtorch to it. As it is, I spent about 20 minutes this evening with methyl ethyl ketone and a paintbrush trying to make a dent - even shot some down into the threads with a syringe hoping that'll help. The stuff on the surface came off, so that's promising at least. I won't be able to fiddle with it again until Friday, probably, so we'll see what a few days of heat + solvent do for it.

If anybody has any other suggestions on that or the mysterious ignition issue, I'm all ears.

I should really buy one that fits my shop compressor. More power!

Impact drivers are wonderful tools, especially ones with 500ftlbs and compact size.

I love mine.

doesn't that e21 have that multu pin thing attached to the column lock? The center turn mechanism slips and power stays on throung the pins that go to the ecm. My e28 had one like that. Does your e21 have a column lock? I just replaced the one in my old 535i. As for the bolt, i'd spray some pb blaster on it and let it sit over night. It going to be tough

Column lock is fine as far as I can tell, it releases like it's supposed to when the key turns. Looking at the oem parts diagram, there are 4 leads on the switch that go off to the harness and a fifth that terminates in the column, which I'm guessing is the lead for the column lock. I suspect one of those other leads is either loose or broken off totally, but I have to get in there to find out.

i suspect a short to power possibly. Can you get a meter to them? Back probe? (lol)

I have to loosen the wheel up a little before I can pop the trim off the column to get to the switch. :(
