I saw this old barrel on a guy's table and noticed it was a percussion cap muzzle-loader. He said he found it metal detecting. Bought all the parts for $10. It's too far gone to restore and there is too much rust to see any markings. I figure the trigger guard is the only telling part from the detail. It looks to be 50cal. I think I'm going to use POR to stabilize the metal and make a display case for it.
Not bad for $10

Awesome.
My kids still wonder why people buy fleas.

Then I didn't lose any money. :-) I just bought it because for $10, I can make an interesting display case and give it to a friend who is into guns.

National Firearms Museum couldn't identify it, but said it was, most likely, pre-Civil War. I found proof marks belonging to the Birmingham Proof Company. They came out after I treated it with a preservative. That puts it between 1813 and 1861. The NRA museum guy called it "relic condition". Made me smile. That was putting it nicely.
