I keep looking at the ones for $50k and asking myself that question. It's not healthy.

Haha, Same.

I keep saying "I could afford that in a couple of years."

Next thing you know you're moving into a small apartment to support the car...and not regretting a minute of it.

Exactly. It's a highly bespoke VAG product. Put together in such a away that is almost humanly impossible to work on without dropping the engine every time.

A small clip from the Enthusiast commandments;

1. Thou shall not expose a car to the conditions.

2. Thou shall not put living space above a garage.

3. Thou shall not care more about a relationship than your car.

4. Thou shall factor maintenance costs into your wedding fund.

I usually tell people for out of warranty European cars, budget the same amount per month as your loan payment and put the extra in a savings account for the car. For example, loan payment is $500, put $500 more into maintenance savings account. Then you should be pretty safe if a control module or air strut fails, as well as normal maintenance.

Great advice! Using my mind reading powers, you are a AMG Technician?

#3 is ultra important. If you can follow that, you're going to live a fulfilling car-rich life.

This seems like excellent advice. And hey, if it costs less to keep the thing, you've got savings for your next ride. :-)

Exactly! Most people think I'm nuts though. Until I give them a $3k quote for blinker fluid and a new turbo encabulator (note: these are not real things and I would never do that, figured I had better say so since I work for a "stealership").

It can be. But like every job it has its ups and downs, also I want more money, but who doesn't.

I did something similar the first time I bought an old "expensive" (depreciated) Mercedes. My budget was about $12K, so I found one in good shape for about $8K, and forced myself to fix the minor things that were wrong right away, so that I could fully enjoy the car. No sense in driving it for the first year being annoyed with little things, if you can help it.

From then on, I just set aside some cash every month for maintenance and repairs, and that worked out really well. I always had happy feelings about that car, especially after it saved my life (but was totaled in the process).

As a European I tend to be amazed by how Americans describe 'our' cars, all lumped together. That said, you only do get a very small array of what's available here and AMGs aren't exactly average . My 14 year old midsize coupe with a French badge but built in Italy needs about €500 ($680) a year in maintenance of which I do nothing myself, with 20k km (12.5k miles) driven a year. Last year was cheaper, the only thing that broke last year was a €5 exhaust mount part, the rest was all standard maintenance.

You do have a point. But we just don't get the economical versions here. We typically get mid level and up. Then we have to pay for the added shipping costs over the pond, both on parts and new vehicle cost. I know, Japanese cars have the same costs built in, but they are engineered and built much cheaper to begin with. For numerous reasons fewer people buy them than other cars, and they tend to have more technology built in and be built in a completely different way, so capable technicians are harder to find and more expensive. Don't get me wrong, I wish it wasn't this way. I wish we got the full range of options that you get.
