The High Museum in Atlanta is featuring an exhibit of historic and significant show cars. My father and I made a trip there today to see these master pieces all in one place. If you are in the Atlanta area I highly recommend making the trip.

Today the cargasm began even before we set foot inside the Museum. The Peachtree Chapter of the Mercedes Owner's Club had some fine German steel on display.

When was the last time you were able to get up close and personal with a Gullwing Mercedes that didn't involve a velvet rope?

Kinja'd!!!

Look at the size of that steering wheel.

Kinja'd!!!

After drooling over the classic Mercs, we wandered inside and were immediately met by a car designed by a Mechanical Engineer who thought he could do better. In 1947 Saabs were yet to be available for the engineering set.

Unlike the above engineer who toiled for 2 years and spent $10,000 building his personal masterpiece, When you are Edsel Ford you can walk into the design studio and tell people to build you a European style speedster.

I love those Exhaust Tips.

Chrysler commissioned Ghia to build them the car of the future and what a car.

Kinja'd!!!

Makes you wonder what the later model entombed in the hull of the Andrea Doria looked like.

Kinja'd!!!

The GM Design and Heritage Center let some of the Motorama girls come south for a visit.

Kinja'd!!!

This Cadillac from 1959 had some interesting forward thinking gadgets.

Kinja'd!!!

Those fender cones are not there because the designer was obsessed with breasts. They contained an early radar unit to warn drivers of obstacles in the road.

Kinja'd!!!

If you are going to pack a truck full of rare GM vehicles A Firebird concept should be included.

Kinja'd!!!

Two door stops made for Ferrari and Lancia in 1970 were on display.

Kinja'd!!!

And finally tucked back in the corner, where the curators I'm sure hoped you would over look it, was this concept from BMW in 2001.

Kinja'd!!!

From the front it really isn't that bad, it has a special fabric skin that was supposed to make it easy to change the design of the car. Why would you want to change the design of such a nice looking car?

Kinja'd!!!

To lipo out the Bangle Butt of course.

Kinja'd!!!

I will resist the urge to embed the video for "Donkey Butt" here.

There were other cars on display these are just the highlights.

Very cool. Thanks for this. I'm thinking of taking my engineering team there for a team building day.

It's very nice, and some of the features on GM's 50s cars were decades ahead of their time and practicality.

I've seen that 300 SL before at a concours d'elegance in Douglassville. It is the oldest known surviving VIN and the owner I believe actually drives it around it is glorious. I guess judged at the concours, those are some great memories :)
