I'm looking at the ELM327 it's under $10 on amazon. I dont necessarily need DTC code scanning I have a scanner for that but I am interested in the info that can be pulled from the car like coolant temp and crap like that just how much info willl one of these provide?
Can I record the information and play it back to see whats going on?

Depends on the app you get on what it can do, but yeah you can get coolant temps and stuff. The cheaper ones like this aren't as responsive, so you're rpms lag behind a bit (like, if you rev it, you'll hear it rev, but it'll take a second for it to register from the app)

I have one that stopped working after a year. It refuses to connect to my phone now.

I have one that looks just like this, i would look more into the Torque app itself for what it can do. Mine will measure temps, hp, torque and such. A lot depends on what your vehicle will be able to tell it. Not sure if it can record but it will give max, mins and averages pretty easily. Reads error codes too.

is it because of the bluetooth or just crappy build?

Anyone ever use something like this with Windows Phone? I know there are apps for it, but I don't know what hardware they're compatible with.

I'm testing the Automatic brand device right now.

it's because of the cheap quality. Higher quality (not to mention more expensive) ones don't lag. It doesn't really matter unless you need revs

I have the "Vgate" OBDII bluetooth thingy paired with Torque on my phone. It works great! Pretty much any information your computer is reading is accessible on the app. Air/fuel ratio, spark advance ect. You can read and clear codes (super useful for clearing a fault that isn't affecting the car any more) Best $12 I ever spent.

Donthave these. I just have a scanguage. But it's cool. I can track all the cars engine info and my 0-60 times and such

If paired with Torque, you pretty much have access to all the information that your OBD system has sensors for.

I think its just less expensive chips that process slower.

I have that exact one and it seems to work good for me. I use the free torque app and it works pretty well. There is a tiny bit of lag. I mostly just got it for the code reading abilities
