I have second hand experience with the 944 and first hand experience with it's lesser sister, the 924. A straight pipe is wayyyy too loud for normal use. It's a little obnoxious and since these cars (I've had cops called on me for my 924 with a straight pipe...since fixed.) have an O2 sensor it sort of messes up the mixture (I think... it runs a little lean.)

Check the timing belt, balance shaft belt, when they were last changed. (just checked original post, looks like you're good on that front.)

The best 944 exhaust setup is no catalytic converter and the stock muffler. cheap and effective. Good luck!

I think my Dad will even get the spider running before your Dad buys his new car. He swears he has it right now. It's running good and not skipping gears. It just flashes the 4 symbol when in fourth but 4th works fine. It might just need a software reset or something.

He was so confident he drove it home and back. I hope we don't have to tow it again...
