Could be a little of both. I can be pretty hard on cheap cranks, and I do know a few others who have done this, but most people who cycle that hard have nicer bikes.

Yeah, I'll be replacing the pedals with a more expensive option. Kind of necessary; I really don't need that to happen again while biking in rush hour.

I've tore the threads out of the bearing housing for the crank before. Cheaper bikes dont deal well with pulling away quickly so my commute killed it.
