After seeing the new Nissan Gran Turismo and it's abundance of lines, curves and sexiness it made me ponder what cars out there have shared the fate of concept hype beasting? What I mean is what cars were announced with a batshit crazy concept then slowly became less and less crazy until it is the model we know today.
Exhibit A: the Chevy Volt. From a Camaro on Terminator sexytime love fest to an above-average-looking-Cruze
*primarily going to appearance here but feel free to throw in any "it will run on unicorn blood!" "Ok actually by unicorn blood we meant dinosaur and by blood we meant fossilized and processed remains"

I like the production on vs the concept. The Concept is horrid looking.

Its horrid but crazy. Everyone went nuts when they announced what was basically an electric camaro. Don't get me wrong I like the way the production looks, but I think they used the concept to wrongly generate hype so they could ease everyone into the production model.

Looking at it, the production version looks similar to the concept version, but it went on a diet of Cheetos and mt. dew and ended up cultivating mass.

Could I just also include the PreVue concept compared to the Vue?
From two-door, side-exhaust, off-roader with some awesome looking wheels.
To a generic CUV for the most part. A handsome one though.

I'll be honest, I never liked the Volt concept. Thought it was ugly, and even more so since the production car came out.
I think the production Volt took many of the styling cues from the concept and applied them to a smoother and more handsome car.

what does that hybrid Tahoe have to do with the volt's design? The Tahoe hybrid only got a few more mpg. The Volt concept had horrid aero for efficiency, so they changed it in order to deliver on their promises of crazy ev range. There is a reason why a Prius looks like it does.

you mentioned aerodynamics, of which the Tahoe has none. Or at least it has the drag coefficient of a brick. Hybrid brick - seems counter productive. I found it amusing :(

as soon as I saw the concept I knew it wasn't going to be close in production. It was the drivetrain that has fascinated me all along. So much so that I ended up buying one last year and it's truly amazing. I do like the look of the production - they kept the aerodynamic shape but kept the looks different enough to stand out from the Prius.
