Can I run a oil cooler like a jackass and use it as a coolant cooler ?! (: fire suit on.

Ok boys and girls .. Last but not least I have a oil cooler that came from a automatic transmission. I want to use said oil cooler to cool my coolant haha by using this oil cooler kinda like a heater core and placing it at the front of the vehicle .

The actual reason I'm thinking about doing this is that the heater hose outlets on the LS v8 are less than 2 inches away from the frame rail and theres no way to cap them unless I run a hose up and back down. I dont have a problem doing this but I have this oil cooler laying around that I don't need just curious what oppo thinks...

No clue but isn't the point of a heater core to get hot and stay hot so you can have a fan blow over it and heat the air that goes into the cabin?

If it isn't acting as your main radiator, why not? I'd just say, make sure its good and clean before you use it, and get all of the oil out of it.

So let me get this straight, where normally your heater would be you'd just place this oil cooler for the sake of the hoses not spurting all over the place?

That's what your radiator is for...I doubt an oil cooler is going to have any discernible effect on your coolant temps considering your radiator can keep up with demand. Put the oil cooler on and us it as an actual oil cooler for the engine.

I believe a "coolant cooler" is called a "radiator," good sir.

It could work in theory, but I don't know if oil coolers are designed differently than coolant variant. On the downside, it'll be very vulnerable to damage from the elements and other vehicles.

It should work I think. A trans cooler is just a small radiator after all but make sure all of the trans fluid is out of it. Personally, I'd just use a hose as a bypass and avoid the extra connections if I didn't need extra cooling capacity. I don't know how the LS is configured but can't you take out the hose fitting and put a pipe plug in there?

I have always wondered this would it help. Being from the desert.

No No .. I have to put at least a foot of hose to block off the heater core lines .. I like the look of the front mount oil cooler but don't need a oil cooler. I'm really being a cheap ass and trying to figure out a way to justify putting the cooler on the front of my car and not have a limp dick foot of hose in my engine bay and 5 feet of mildy bullshit hose to the front bumper for "cooling" haha get it ?

So what would normally be on the heater core lines? Just a line, that's it?

A front mount cooler would look cool. It'd be funny too explaining all it's doing is moving coolant through it.

If you want the look without the complication, you're stuck with a limp dick up there...

Why not just relocate your power steering cooler to there, or the trans cooler?

I'd find a right angle connector so you can keep your heater. I'm all for having heat. De-fogs the windshield super fast, and it's nice in the early spring and late fall. Unless you don't mind freezing your ass off while driving. I'm a big fan of comfort whenever possible.

power steering cooler to there, or the trans cooler?

I don't have power steering or a automatic gearbox so no need for either one of those things. I'm also a big fan of comfort.. The car has A/c ! but I live in Austin Texas where it's hot most of the time and cold rarely . This past winter was the gnarliest by far.

I agree .. Everyone would think I'm boosted or someshit until I pop my hood and explain I'm cooling the coolant hahahahahaha

Then I guess you're screwed. Just put a loop in there, fill it with something, and call it a day?

To cap the coolant, could you put some plugs in or do you need flow from one side to the other?

I'd prefer to have flow from one side to the other. That's how it would work with the heater core on . and I'll end up using a heater core again ! but not right now . Would rather not rip the dash off when I'm a few days away from driving my ls swapped 280z .. The heater core thats in the car is busted at the moment and don't want to change it .

If it's temporary, then I wouldn't got through the effort of plumbing in the oil cooler to the coolant system.

In the end, it'll be quicker just to run a length of pipe, and you'll be driving the car sooner. Then when you put the heater core back, you can just take it off again.
