As the driver of a 400+HP manual transmission car, I will say: If you track it, go manual. If you don't, who cares? The two transmissions have two different types of users and a both good and what their purpose is. It's like saying hot wings can only have one flavor. (just had hot wings and looking for a reason to talk about them.) Blasphemy. End of story.

I actually was going to buy a '78 Camaro project car a few years ago that had that done to it. Pretty fun test drive is putting it mildly.

Ah, a manual box with no clutch pedal. Yes, you can buy the opposite too although not in a car.

When those old automatics have good valvebody tweaks and you put in one of those shifters, it is magical. Your clutch or synchros won't disintegrate because it doesn't have any and it will shift faster and harder than any manual.

People diss automatics, but they likely haven't driven a properly set up one.

It baffles me when people compain about modern automatics, because they are quite decent. If you want to know what a miserable automatic feels like, then drive a car with the Buick Dynaflow automatic. That damn Hellcat transmission is the reason the term slushbox exists.

If I build a 270 hp car with a four-speed column shift manual, and take it to the track, does that make me insane?

06/25/2014 at 15:53

Lol but it was in Buicks, should need to shift fast for someone over 65 years old.

Kinja'd!!!0

It was also in M18 Hellcat tank destroyer tanks.

They are ridiculously smooth because it never shifted at all. It was incapable of shifting because it stayed in high gear all the time. You had to manually engage low gear if you wanted to go up a hill. It is only considered an automatic because it had no clutch.

The torque multiplication of the trans also made acceleration frightfully slow.

If you were over 65 in 1950, then you could get a car with the Hydramtic instead. Oldsmobile's Hydramatic was also smooth and slow shifting, but it didn't murder acceleration like the Dynaflow, because it had 4 speeds and used them all.

Wasn't entirely crap. It was strong enough to be used in tanks. It's just that they put it in a car . . .

I am no longer here to fight over manual vs automatic. I am here to fight to get the goddamn +/- selections in the right place.

- (forward) to downshift.

+ (back) to upshift

This is correct

In trucks (proper ones, not pick ups). There are several makes but the one I'm thinking is Scania's Opticruise which as originally conceived controlled only the gearbox. You therefore started off using a clutch pedal and from there the electronics and pneumatics carried out clutchless changes on an otherwise standard synchromesh box which isn't something you come across very often. Nowadays the clutch is generally automated as well but some buyers still go for the three pedal option as they consider that low speed manoeuvring is easier with a manual clutch. Drivers with the full automatic option sometimes complain that they accelerate gently and nothing happens so they apply a few more revs and then oh-my-God-I'm-going-to-crash-into-my-trailer.

Very interesting, and also with autos thats the same issue I also find. Reverse in a hill is hard to modulate.
