...what do people think of my attempts to fix the TR7/8? I've been wanting to get one and try grafting on flying buttresses, and I've been crudely using photoshop to try and mock up what one would look like.
The latest idea is to black out the lower part of the rear bumper, and then paint the controversial scallop down each side in a darker version of the main colour (or perhaps dark blue/black if it's a white car). Visually, it helps disguise the expanse of metal towards the rear of the car, which is exacerbated by the flying buttresses.
A similar thing featured on the various rally versions of the car, which seemed to help a lot (pics below). I think it looks better than my previous idea, which was for a piece of black trim to run along the sill.
What do you reckon?

I think the buttress becomes too much of a conflicted set of lines if it gets extended rearward without a "fix" to the window line. I think a fill-in triangular window behind the door might blunt the awkwardness a bit. There's also precious little boot to accentuate by pulling out the buttresses. I agree a more sloped line helps, but it might do well to take it out of the rear roofline.
I like the effect of the side fillet in the last example. I think the best way to solve the fat look in the middle is to increase the wanderhome along the full length of the rocker and make the apparent body much shorter in profile - similar to the XKE. Perhaps at some point that starts to interfere with the squared-off styling - maybe make the tucked under edge defined with an angle of its own.

I think it looks nicer without the shop. I think it is a unique feature on the at it should be kept!

Oh I plan to as well :)
Actually, it was due to the XJS that the TR7/8 didn't get flying buttresses. They were planning for it to have them, but they proved a bit controversial on the XJS so they nixed them quite late on. You can see the makings of them on the old development mules:

I get what you mean about the window line now. I might try and 'shop (I say 'shop, I mean MS Paint) a little quarterlight in the back and see what it looks like.
The difficulty with extending the buttresses by shortening the roof-line is that if I ever come to making the thing, that'd be a real bugger to do.
What's wanderhome? I've heard it before as a styling term, but I can't for the life of me remember what it is.

Curvature of the body back to a more narrow profile, basically. Typically describes the extent to which a car's greenhouse tapers at the top, but can also mean how much the rockers tuck under.
