Kinda a rant here, just pissed at stupidity.

Its a once sleepy farm town that refuses to accept there is a 25,000 student university in their backyard. A few years back Campus Crest, a huge students housing company, wanted to build out one of their Grove luxury apartment complex's to accompany their Copper Beach that was one of the many apartment complex's already built. Only issue is the plot of land, which was an empty field, needed to be rezoned. No big deal you would think, and actually it wasnt. But this where the problems start, some guy started a grass roots campaign claiming collusion between the zoning board and the developers, and long story short the township changed its mind and rejected the already approved proposal. Campus Crest filed a lawsuit and won, kinda. The final decision said that the complex had to resemble a residential neighborhood. Because thats what students want, the suburbs. I understand its all farmers out here, but how can you be that dumb to force student housing to look like a residential neighborhood.

This is what it was supposed to look like.

The now proposed plan looks like this.

Not that uncommon, even with big city schools. I went to Temple, and the residents surrounding the campus in North Philadelphia hated having the school there, even though everything around the campus is basically a Detroit-style warzone.

I go to school at Grand Valley, which is in Allendale, about 20 mins west of Grand Rapids. I like to call it the biggest school you've never heard of. In popularity among students its probably now the number 3 public university in the state.

I know people who went to Grand Valley. I went to a similar good but relatively unknown school. Kettering. Trust me, I would take some old people bitching about zoning over the constant threat of murder in Flint any day.

Purdue is the same way. The city of West Lafayette and a good majority of its residents seem to hate the university. Yet, if the university, its staff, and 40,000+ students packed up and left, the city would cease to exist.

Seriously though, student population more than doubles that of the entire town. All of these nice things you enjoy wouldnt be here without us.

I assume the school is pretty new-ish, then.

Early 60's was when it was built. But has grown incredibly fast as of recently and is showing no sign of stopping anytime soon. Enrollment has doubled since 1990 alone. That being said many didnt expect it ever to become anything more than a commuter school.

Yeah, both the universities I've gone to were established a century before that.

When I first visited a friend's newer school, I was a little surprised at the lack of a college town dynamic.

My college town hates my college as well. Rednecks and naval officers don't mix with liberal art students. This year was pretty bad. Townies start hitting on other guys girlfriends and it ends in broken bones and blood.

I think just about every town hates their local schools. They want the thousands of kids with semi-disposable income to buy stuff, but not deal with the noise and puke at 2 am.
