I am studying mechanical engineering and hoping to use that degree to design cars someday when I grow up.
This is what i think an IDX based shooting brake should look like.
My design calls for a lengthening of the platform so 4 wheels can fit in the back and a straight 6 derived from the ZEOD RC 400 hp 3 cylinder detuned to 350hp total can fit in the front.
What do y'all think?

Ain't nobody got room straight 6's anymore.
Just too long to package efficiently. Esp. because if you just want 350hp, they can slot the VQ37 in there a lot easier. #BuzzKillington

True. If I was designing this for Nissan instead of just for myself, then I would design it for the VQ37 instead of a straight 6. This is meant as a dream car based that is only somewhat based in reality. I have considered the engineering realities, while ignoring most realities of cost and the car market. Thanks for your input I do really appreciate it.

Then why not just slot the ZEOD RC's straight 3 in there, detune it to around 250, which would be plenty for this application, and probably doable on non-race octane fuel. That would fit even better than a V6 probably.

Without a doubt that sounds good. Not to mention it sounds even better product placement wise. More HP than a BRZ/FRS but less than the Z's. Should be a light engine to boot.

Ignoring realities is more fun.

Fun fact. You don't go to engineering school to design cars. You go to art school to design cars.

I want to work on the engineering underneath the design rather than the outward design itself.

You are right about that. My engineer mind likes the balanced properties of a straight 6 even though that 3 cylinder is really good enough on its own. The 3 cylinder on its own would allow a great product slot, but this is meant as a hypothetical car. I wanted a shooting brake design with a straight 6 and rear wheel drive. Ideally I would have done this with a hypothetical company in mind, but Nissan doesn't sell engines to other companies (and the ZEOD 3 cylinder is probably the best 3 cylinder around) and for this car to exist and be built with that engine, it would have to be a Nissan and as such it would probably be based around the IDx platform and design language. I took those few business realities into account but that is about it. thanks for the feedback.

I'm studying Industrial Design. Here's my concept (sorry for the crappy marker work, its my first time using acetone markers). What do you think?

Not to shabby, but do yourself a favor and invest in these.

Ohh damn my bad, just haven't heard to them being called acetone before. But get that paper nice and juicy and it will blend easier.
…. I just went and looked at the few photos I have from Freshman year … I should't judge lol.

I know its a little late now because the school year is over but I'd creep on CCS viscom blogs if I was you. They're slightly higher classes but the work is still revenant. I just jacked this from the viscom4 class. Its photoshop but the core/light is spot on and probably the info you want. Also its the teacher's work, who is a Jeep designer.
EDIT: sorry this is getting long, but this is actually viscom 1&2 marker type stuff, just had to look harder.
