So when !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! , I promised in the comments that I would try it out and write a review next time I would fly through Heathrow. Here it is!
!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!
The British Airways 1 st class burger AKA the BA Burger
(Full disclosure: British Airways wanted me to try their BA Burger so badly that they required me to fly almost halfway to the moon in one year to grant me access to their 1 st Class Lounge to order that famous burger.)
So I've been really excited to try out the BA Burger in the 1 st class lounge ever since I read about it on FlightClub… Unfortunately I never get to fly 1 st class because economy tickets are company policy and I am by no means rich enough to afford the ticket myself. But I do fly a lot. Not enough to get a plane named after me but enough to get access to the 1 st class lounge on international flights and that famous burger. And today is that day!
Presentation: 6/10
Pretty nice, but I wasn't blown away. Looking at the press picture from BA and the actual burger reminded me of an ad for a Big Mac and the Big Mac you actually get. It's like comparing Beverly Hills to West Hollywood. Not. The. Same!
Taste 7/10
I would hire an Irish guy to handle theft prevention and an Italian to manage logistics before I would hire a British chef so my expectations were pretty low. The quality of the ingredients were definitely top notch but somehow it still just wasn't great. Look, I'm not saying it was really bad, but honestly had it been a $20 burger at a gourmet restaurant, I would have sent it back. It was just that overcooked!
Ambience 5/10
Honestly, not my cup of tea! The conversations you hear in this lounge are definitely quite different than most other places. Like: "Oh you must come to our second vacation home in Bahrain, Darling. It is exquisite" or "Now we have to figure out, how to get those Rubles out of the country". And that was just while I was waiting for the burger. Not my world but it's interesting to listen to the problems of the 1%. However, I would prefer a Mexican Tequila Bar in Ensenada during the Baja 1000 any day of the week!
Value 10/10
Free. Nothing more to say about that!
Conclusion
I live in San Diego, I have many great burger choices. If the BA burger was served in my home town it would be far from my first. Hodad's, Rocky's and In N' Out would all be better options than the BA burger, but… we're at an airport and compared to the average airport food it is still far far better. Just don't but a 1 st class ticket to try it out. Your money would be far better spent on a 1998 Mazda Miata.

As a British person who lives in Britain and eats British burgers , I have to say that Burger looks unusually tall for something of British origin. Either way how has airlinefood become the standard bearer for British ... I was gonna say cuisine but one of benefits of the empire is that we just imported every one else's cuisine instead and as a result I don't think we have enough stuff for it to be classified as cusine, seriously fish and chips is not cusine no matter how many lemons you squeeze on it.

YOU WILL EAT THIS BURGER AND LIKE IT, FOO
But jokes aside, that's about right IMO.
From the original article, this made me actually chuckle out loud:
If you've ever flown First Class on an international airline (which I have not), you'd probably expect to receive some of the best service and dining equivalent to that of a four or five-star restaurant.
You might expect that, but you are not getting it. First class is much better than coach in levels of overall comfort but it's easily surpassed by a mid-level place on the ground.

Being lucky enough to have a liner pilot of a father which allowed me to fly in first class on international flights quite often, I have to say JAL first class food was the best... I forgot what I ate, but damn, that was by far the best... United was not the worse but the "most common"... Just normal food, well presented and served to you... meh. I have yet to try BA though...

The best burger I've had in town here (Grand Rapids, MI), is at Louis Benton's steakhouse, I had it in their bar/lounge area, which is a lot more low-key than the steakhouse portion of the restaurant. Anyways the burger, it is a half-chorizo/half-beef burger, at any rate, their house burger is, they also have a number of other burgers which I believe are all beef. I've tried quite a few different ones there. Much Yum.

I've been to Europe a few times and one conclusion I reached a long time ago was... Europeans do not know how to make great hamburgers.
If you want a great hamburger, you'll only get it in North America... though I suspect Australia may have some decent offerings.
The worst hamburger I ever had was in Austria (the country next to Germany). Everything about it was wrong. The bread was a too-firm kaiser. It had cucumbers instead of pickles. It had tomato sauce instead of ketchup. The mustard was wrong. No relish. No Mayo. The meat was dry. It was The Worst.
You're almost always better off going with local specialties. In the case of the British... get some sort of meat pie, bangers and mash, roast beef/pork, tea with biscuits, bread with cheese or just have an all-beer meal. If you're in Austria, you can't go wrong by getting the schnitzel with potato salad... or schnitzel on a bun if you're in a hurry.

I had that burger in the BA first class lounge in Heathrow last year (my business travel is not as restricted under certain circumstances). It's not as good as at least 6 burgers I can walk to get from my office, but it's pretty good for airline food.
The funny thing to me is that I had to show my first class ticket to at least 4 different people to get to the lounge. Security to get there was tougher than to get onto the plane. I flatter myself that I'm young looking for 42, but not that young looking. I guess their general policy is that people in jeans get a second, third, and fourth looking-over.
You're right about the funny conversations. I sat down next to an older guy to do some work, who was on his cell phone complaining about his flight being delayed, how the airline should do better, etc. Suddenly the shrewdest of the ticket-lookers I had interacted with came over and started apologizing profusely in person, can we do anything to help, etc., and the guy came out with "I should have taken our company jet."
Looked him up on the inter webs - yup, CEO of BA. I guess he gets better treatment from the lounge attendants. Here's the thing - if you're an airline, isn't every jet the company jet?

Uh, yeah... if I'm going long haul anywhere on an airliner, they usually have free alcohol (just ask for it).
When I'm hungry, I'll eat a Guinness (the term "drink" doesn't exactly apply to a bottle of Guinness). It's a meal.
When I'm thirsty, I'll have a lager.
When I need a breakfast cereal, I'll have a nice grain alcohol.

Actually McDonald's takes pride in making their burgers the same no matter where you are. I verified that when I had a test Big Mac in Venice, Italy. It was exactly the same.
You probably thought it was the best because you were absolutely dying for a hamburger.

I don't think you've been to much of the world if you think Britain has some of the finest beef. I had steak over there several times and at the very best it was chain restaurant in the US quality. You can probably get a good steak in a swanky place in London but outside of that I stand by my statement that you should avoid eating beef there.

Everything you listed that was "wrong" about that burger (with the exception, perhaps, of "the meat was dry" is subjective.
So in fact your story reads like "Nowhere but America can you get a burger that's just like the burgers you get in America". Which is pretty reasonable.

People need to stop spreading this BS, Guinness is on the low end of the calorie count when it comes to beers. It is not heavy, it does not fill you more than others, it is just dark.

That's quite a sweeping assumption you're making. I've seen plenty of the world - including a couple of trips to the US. In a past life, I've also been a chef, so I'd like to think I've a fair idea of what I'm talking about. I wouldn't expect to get good quality beef in a place that serves burgers, though. The standard of beef in the UK is excellent by any standard in the world. Basing that opinion on a hamburger or a badly cooked steak is bound to leave you thinking it isn't. I say this as someone whose country's beef is probably considered better, though. And if you're getting lamb in the UK, it's probably going to be Irish.

That is simply not true. I lived in London and Cairo when I was a kid...and like all American kids of time, I liked me some McDonald's. I could tell immediately when I ate at a McDonald's in either country that it tasted much better.
There are a lot of processed ingredients that McDonald's (and other such companies) puts in their food in the U.S. that are practically illegal in European markets. Half of McDonald's food in the UK market is sourced from British and Irish farmers. In Egypt, all the meat and grains and vegetables are sourced locally.

"Britain has some of the finest beef." Wh-wh-whaaat?! Says the country that had the mad cow disease epidemic.
I've lived in lots of places, and I've learned that meat in the middle east is not good, unless you get it imported from South America, british beef is "ok" at best, American meat is just a bit better than "ok" when you get one of the expensive ones. South Brazillian and Uruguayan is great and Argentinian is just hands down the best (and you can get grassfed cheaper than feedlot meat in the U.S).

You are the first person I've crossed paths with who has claimed that you can get good beef in Britain. "Here's the thing - if you're an airline, isn't every jet the company jet?"
Yes... unless there are some turboprops in the fleet for regional routes...

no. I'm saying Indian food isn't Indian in Britain. Most of the dishes were either invented in Britain or are so far removed from their original guise that they can no longer be called Indian. In most cases, Indian restaurants are run by people from Pakistan or Bangladesh. It's the same (albeit in a much smaller scale) here in Ireland.

Plus, where's the rest of it? Where I come from, that's called a "slider".

I dunno the ones I went to had basically the same food as Indian food in the United States which I know is authentic for the most part. I know it's not the same as street food and it's regional but as far as I know it's all very similar to what you can find in India. It's not like Chinese food which has no relation to actual Chinese food.

Those numbers mean nothing to me I buy on taste and occasionally ABV.

Honestly, I doubt it's even the best burger in Heathrow, let alone in London. But as plane food (or free food) goes, it's not bad.

It's not BS, just misunderstood. The same thing that makes Guinness so foamy in the glass makes it foamy in your stomach, making you feel quite full/bloated.

My brother said some of the worst food and the worst burgers he ever had in his life were in Australia.

I thought it was well established that V6 Mustangs were the official currency of Jalopnik.

In N Out is crap, the only saving grace it has is that it is cheap.

Get on a plane, fly to Texas, go to Texas Roadhouse and order a steak. You are welcome.
