For those of you who don't know yesterday i asked what you guy's thought about the C4 Corvette.
The response was much more then i expected, I appreciate it. Now i got to drive a 1985 with white exterior and red interior. MUST HAVE RED INSIDES NOW! The only real problem it had was the The THE AUTOMATIC! (cries of pain). Also the brakes which felt mushier then a wet sponge. They did have power however once you got to the last bit of peddle travel. The steering was light, responsive and give greater feedback then my E36 328i. The Corvette also felt a lot slower then i was expecting. It felt as if it had 190hp instead of 230hp as advertised. I felt my 328i would walk a way from it in straight line. I am not going to be to mean to the C4 just yet for i have yet driven one with a 6speed or one with all the emissions off. All in all it was a very nice car with a few problems. I am going to give the C4 a 6.5/10.

The C4 Vette is slow. I beat one with my Focus ST by at least 2-car lengths, and that was before I tuned my ST. Then again, those cars are old and probably lost some of their stallions too.

I own an '85, and a stock L98 is definitely more about low end torque. With less than $2,500 invested in the engine, though, 300 HP is possible and with a better top end it will definitely stay with some of the best cars. A manual '85 will get to 60 in 5.8 seconds stock.

For the price of a new FoST, you could have an 11 second C4 in great shape that handled like nothing else, though!

Possibly, the one that raced me was probably cheap and beat to hell, but who knows. You could also have a nice used '10-13 Mustang GT and have some extra for mods too! :P

I think the Focus ST is possibly the best all-round choice among modern fun cars, but a nice 6 speed L98 with so much invested could translate to quite a capable classic! A V8 with possibly the greatest aftermarket mated to a 6 speed on an advanced suspension system wrapped in a small, sleek skin out of the box, then made to rev and handle even better while putting down more power... sorry just brainstorming I guess.

Give it some mod-love, and all will be well in the world.

No worries! What you speak of is true. I'd like a sexy sounding, high revving 6-cylinder engine though; wonder where I could find such an engine......
Oh wait. Lol that's right! :D

Don't call it slow! Not every C4 is the same. The later years are faster. And you can mod them.
You can take a V8's power with but you can't take it's soul! The power can be untamed.

I tell you I will tame a 928 if it's one of the many things I do! And it is!!

It is not! C4s can be fast! Just like later 928s are faster than early 80s 928s!!

As overpriced, underbuilt, and underwhelming as corvettes are, I can think of so many other cars that are cheaper/easier to acquire, faster, more comfortable, better built, and overall more fun. I'll grant that a corvette is light and the engines can take some wicked tunes and swaps, but at the end of the day it's still a plastic car that makes you feel like your ass is about to scrape the road and has a worse interior than a cavalier.
I also think a requirement of corvette ownership is having at least three of the following criteria: Middle-aged, chest hair not contained by a tank top, gold-colored medallion necklace which rests in said chest hair, mullet or bald(ing), inability to properly drive a stick shift without burning the clutch, and poor taste in music that's played too loudly.
As someone else said, I'd rather have an '05+ Mustang, Fiesta ST, or any number of other cars before a corvette, including (and especially) a Volvo wagon with a V8 swap, and a Miata.

The c4 gets a lot of hate, but it's a really solid car when not ratted out. Remember they were built at a time when GM started thinking about this strange thing called handling.Your first problem with performance other than maintenance is the intake setup. I own a tpi Camaro. The long intake runners leave it out of juice pretty quick. Adding a stealth ram or another after market intake system can pick up over 50 hp. I'd upgrade the cam too. Those might be a little expensive, but you'll gain a lot of horsepower without changing the motor.

Well, it depends WHICH C4 ;)
But yes, 1985 automatic will be slow :)

Pass on that one. 1986 just begins to start getting better but had a lot of quality issues. 1988 revised suspension. 1991 early lt1, 1992 LT1 with better electronics. 1993 the same. 1994 a bit better. 1996 LT4 car. Tuning is hard with the earlier cars...at least with a LT1 car you have Lt1edit. Of course the smartest thing to do is yank out that engine and put a carbed small block or LS swap in it.

Thanks everyone you all had very valid arguments. Although to make a decision on the C4 i will have to drive a newer one with a 6speed and more POWER. I want to give the C4 a fighting chance before i move on to the next car i will be looking at.
