"JQJ213- Now With An Extra Cylinder!" (jqj213)

So, browsing Craigslist today, I have found a !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! . He's asking $400. No pics in the ad but I did go drive by to take a look at it today. It was really rough. Roof seemed rather rusty, doors were missing trim, no headliner, airbag was out of the steering wheel, and filthy as hell. But, it did run and drive fine with no issues whatsoever. Talking with him, he'd take $350.
!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!
This seems to me like a really good deal. I could either A) Fix it up and sell for a hell of a lot more. These are great to find parts for since there are so many aftermarket.
Or B) Buy it and part out. I mean most of it was there, and bits and pieces could give me good money.
Possible C) Lemons car?!?!
I liked the idea of having another XJ, I mean the first car my parents had when I was born was a black 96 XJ just like this one but in MUCH better shape. But this being an automatic and so rough, I wouldn't want to buy this one AT ALL.
Am I an idiot here? I just feel that I could flip for money with some cleaning and junkyard hunting!
Lead photo from Google. If it looked this good, it'd be in my driveway by now.

Chop the top off. Add a tube roll cage to replace rigity. Add bikini top. Avoid Bikini bottom (the property rates are plummeting ). Profit!

If you have the time, money and space then a flip would probably work fine, but I'd double check that title. The airbag thing is a little sketchy.

Salvage title? LeMons car. Or flip it. Or build it into an off road monster. It's life as a street car are just about over from the sound of it.

Not sure if LeMons would be cheating or not. I mean, it wouldn't go very fast, but the thing would never stop...
Give it a mad max type front end, and enter it. Call it "Bone Crusher" or something like that. Bribe the judges by saying you'll ram their least favorite car, and give them candy as well.
Profit?

It depends on your arsenal of tools. Factor in that you'll have to pay registration and initiate a new insurance policy into the cost of flipping it also. At least in Georgia you have to get it registered and insured within thirty days and can't transfer title unless it has registration (unless it is over 25 years old). Little bits of trim add up quickly. If you were buying it for a daily beater, it is a no-brainer. To flip it though? It carries a little risk since they aren't all that valuable in the first place.

Oh, and as someone who has done LeMons, don't use an XJ. You'll have to pump a few grand into it to pass safety tech and you'll just have a $3000 race car that won't corner worth a crap.

Will I really have to register/insure? Shit I was planning on skipping that for a flip. And I have a local pick and pull yard here reporting 13 of these so Im sure trim would be rather cheap.
As for value, i do slightly disagree. Down here they go for wayyy too much. A stock clean one goes for about $4000. Lifted or custom anywhere from $6500+
And Lemons was more joke than serious, I couldnt afford to make a team

Im not too worried about part cost because I have a local pick n pull yard that has over 10 sitting on the lot right now.
And I can also just buy cheap aftermarket shit offline since there is so much aftermarket support on it

And it would truly go forever!

I think the seller fucked up there (he was dumb ass redneck who seemed to be on something) thinking that it needs work and is therefore worth salvaging. The title itself was clean though.
It seems like a pretty easy flip if I take a few days to clean up and fix a few bits.

I was really confused too because there was no visual accident damage on the car, but the airbag was not in the steering wheel like it should've. Also, dont these have multiple by '96?

Something tells me contact is not legal.
But with a name like "Bone Crusher," you have to expect a certain amount of rule breaking. Just say you're clearing the track of cars that weren't legal anyway, and then just steal the checkered flag, pit stop, hand it to someone who can run fast, peel out, race to the line, have them wave the flag.
It's not really breaking the rules if there aren't really any rules to begin with....right?

Why is the airbag out? Did it deploy? If so, that thing was crashed even if it wasn't reported to the DMV. $400 is cheap for anything that just needs "a little work". Maybe to you can clean it up and get a grand out of it... but there are less risky cars out there if you want to Wheeler Dealer yourself some quick cash. Try fixing up a CJ if you want to work on a Jeep, those are dead simple and can be worth some money in good condition.

Check your local laws (I don't know where you live) but in Georgia, you have to register a titled vehicle before you can resell it or they will come after you for the taxes you owe on it. Your current insurance policy probably has a gap coverage to cover you for a limited amount of time from the date you purchase it, but they expect you to start a new policy before that grace period ends. So, if you have smog testing where you are, you'll have to make sure it complies before any of that goes through, most likely.
Like I said, I'm in Atlanta and have owned over a dozen cars here. I actually bought a car that someone tried to flip without registering and had such a fiasco with the tag office that I ended up selling it as an untitled roller.

I bought a beater 93 XJ for $250 with a cracked trans. Replaced the ax15 with another junkyard trans for another $250.
It worked good for a bit with some repairs needed like water pump, and crank position sensor.
At this point that thing is likely destened to be a beater. Best you may be able to do is $1000 if in pretty good shape. Search for other XJs in the shape you look to get it into to flip it.
I'd go for it if you want a car that you don't give a rats ass about, & like I did eventually chop some or all of the top off. You really don't get a chance to do that often.

It was really odd because NO WHERE did the body show any signs of collisions. It looked like it deployed out, but only the steering wheel one did. The title was clean though, so something might not have been reported.
Like I said, mechanically this thing was super solid. Started right up, smooth shifts, good brakes, no weird idle or noises. Seems like I could clean it up and make $$$.
I like the idea of the low risk. I could part it out or scrap for what I pay if shit goes wrong.. its rather tempting

Buy it, pull the doors (and maybe chop the roof off like a bronco), and drive the living hell out of it. When you crash it or run out of gas, scrap it for $200.
