So weve all seen the recall for the airbgs from Takata - i wonder though

i wonder, if the GM scandal was not around - if it was a normal day in autos and there was no global recall scourge - would Takata have discovered this airbag flaw or is it only apparent because everything auto related(mostly) is now under massive scrutiny and Takata did a once over and found this issue?

The problem has likely been known a long time and they've kept it under the lid until another manufacturer's bigger recall made it possible to release theirs without as much negative press.
