There have now been 21 seasons of Top Gear and it's easily the best auto-variety show out there. Between the reviews and hilarious remotes and celebrity lap times, it's got something for everyone. But which season was the best? While there haven't really been any "duds" some seasons have definitely been better than others.
My choice would be season 12. There was the US trip with muscle cars, the lorry challenge, the epic race in Saint-Tropez, Communism car reviews, the hilarious Ford Fiesta review and the British Touring Car retrospective. But season 12 also had my two favorite remotes, the economy race to Blackpool and the Vietnam special.
The Blackpool race was just so unique and interesting. The comedy was superb and seeing the big XJ make it all the way and then some was remarkable. I loved it when they did it on Top Gear US as well, those guys don't have as much chemistry as the UK crew, but you can't deny the challenges are pretty fun and unique.
The Vietnam Challenge was excellent. I liked the Botswana special, and I thought the Oliver arc was charming but the Vietnam special had a little bit of everything that makes TG so good. And watching Jeremy learn how to ride a scooter properly was hilarious.
So what's the best season?

Series 7.
The Veyron challenge from Italy to the UK. The supercar road trip through France. The Italian supercar for Mondeo money challenge. Zonda F Review and many more.
As Guests two of my favourites of all time. Ellen MacArthur and Ian Wright
The production was smooth and experienced while the presenters and ideas were still fresh. There were also still polls and various walls like the Cool Wall around. I loved those segments.

Series 10 and 12 came to mind for me as well, The Vietnam and Polar specials are my absolute favourite shows.
Correction on the amphibious car challenge though, that was series 10, the first was series 8.
Series 10 was excellent for the aforementioned amphi-cars, the 24h Britcar race, Hammond/Stig in the Renault F1 car and the greatest driving road in the world trip (all favourites of mine).
I'll go with series 10 then, and if I could count the Polar special as part of this series (I can't, it was between 9 & 10), it would be perfect.

Yes to the seasons 10 and 12 but I'll also add the season 16 with the Middle-East Special, the Albanian Gangsters trials and the 959 vs F40 episodes.

Since you chose 12, my other favorite would be series 15.
15 had the new SIARPC, Campervan Challenge, British Sportscar Challenge, famous guests like Cameron Diaz, Tom Cruise and Jeff Goldblum and, finally, the Ayrton Senna tribute.

Can't really say I have a favorite series, anything other than the first one is really pretty good. Jason Dawe was dreadful.
I agree that any of their travel-challenges/races are always great to watch.

I rather liked Series 18, aside from the fact that will.i.am appeared in it. My highlights;
- India Special
- Supercar Trip through Italy (M-600, Aventador, MC4-12C)
- Off Road Mobility Scooters
- Aeroplane Engine Cars
- Saab retrospective.
- Track Day Cars (XBow vs. R500 vs. Morgan 3 Wheeler)
- Rallycross (Can you go racing for less than the cost of golf?)

That was a great special, but it was a christmas episode. So it was without a season though technically I guess it's between 18 and 19

My daughter and I love the Botswana episode, and we'll probably name her car Oliver when we get one for her. As for seasons, I'm not 100% sure as they're all good (even the slow 2nd season).
I personally love when they challenge the Australian presenters , and I love the "17 year old challenge" episode. "What am I supposed to tell my mum?!"

It's not my absolute favourite, but series 9 was pretty great. It had the US roadtrip, Top Gear's first proper international special, the Reliant Robin Space Shuttle, and the tractor episode.
