Friend's mom got so used to the backup sensor beeping for no reason that she didn't notice them beeping to alert her to the fact the Roadsofa was behind her truck. Result: I need a new rear bumper, and my trunk doesn't close quite right anymore.

Oh, goody.

What, friend's mom doesn't have A) a checkbook, B) insurance or C) a sense of moral responsibility and a desire to set a proper example for her children and their peer group ?

I had a woman in a lesabre of the same vintage back into the front bumper of my 96 bronco. It broke her tail light and cracked the bumper

The only thing I had to do to my truck was pull pieces of her broken tail light from the bumper trim.

No 1 cause of phantom sensor beeping is dirt. Clean your cars people.

Over here, it's snow. These sensors go nuts when there's snow and ice on them.

She should pay for the repairs...

If she doesn't want to, call your insurance company, show them the damage, and fuck your friend's mom's insurance cost

That too. With average drivers these things can be more harm than good. I prefer reverse cameras for those who are weak at parking.

No, she's paying for repairs, but it's annoying and now I'll have to re-paint the damn thing.

She will pay for it, but it's a hell of a headache.

The bumper isn't the end of the world. The trunk not wanting to close could be a much bigger deal. Have a pro look at it.

Got it. I was hoping she wasn't going to try to pull a " we'll you're just one of my son's friends. You don't count" routines.

Looks like she hit it hard enough to bend the subframe by a couple millimeters, so when I close the trunk it sounds very different and you can see it visibly move a smidge to the right now, since the latch doesn't quite mesh up correctly.

no sir. Not the subframe. The whole rear unibody structure. Check if the back doors are sticky too. Especially the one on the far side from the damage. Don't take any money until an insurance or auto body pro looks at it.

If there is an issue and one of the doors won't shut right (haven't checked yet) how much would it cost to fix?

Quite possibly a lot. Frame damage is no joke and will make the car tough to get rid of if you ever wanted to, your friend's mom dun goof'd.

I was in the auto body repair biz several year ago, so my prices just wouldn't be valid anymore. Here is a clue of how they pull unibody cars.

The use a system of lasers to measure to ensure that the important mounting points are 'square' to one another. GM would give a system of measuring points, they aren't just guessing. Then the tech clamps the middle section of your car down to a bench very tightly.

Sometimes it's just a matter of the sheet metal is moved. They call this a body pull. It just realigns the door openings and the taillights line up with the trunklid, yada yada. Like a doctor diagnosing over the phone, this is my guess of your situation.

The alternative is virtually the same but called a frame pull. This is when those points that GM calls out are no longer square and it's the tech's job to make it right so it's safe and your tires are all in proper alignment. It's really the same process, but requires a lot more care, time and much much more training.

I really don't think your car got it this hard. It could be as little as $300-500 in labor to clamp the car down, measure and do a quick pull to get the trunk to close. If it is a full frame pull, it could be several hundred to a thousand more than that. All of this work is outside of repairing or replacing the bumper cover.
