Is Architecture-lopnik a thing?

Kinja'd!!!

That was the field I wanted to go into, but 8 years of post-high schooling just isn't my forte.

It ought to be, if it's not already.

I like how the white brick runs down and turns into the white roof on the parking structure. And the mixture of dark and light.

Very nice. 10/10.

Parking lot needs a repave though.

I'll see if the insurance covers that. After all, if someone blows a tire or bends a rim, it could be a liability.

Look up Fallingwater, designed by Frank Lloyd Wright. I'd post a pic, but I'm on my phone. You'll love it. I've been there four times. I even proposed to my wife on one of the balconies.

I love Falling Water. Prettiest of all of FLW's houses.

Kinja'd!!!

I toured the Kraus House in St. Louis when I was in middle school. The attention to detail that man put into everything was astounding. Even all the visible nail-heads were turned the same direction.

Kinja'd!!!

And those cantilevers. Ugh.

(Not the Ferris Bueller house - this one's in Detroit and is a real van der Rohe, not a copy.)

His attention to detail was insane. After four times there, I still see new things every time.

You're in high school, right? They do student residencies there for high school kids who are interested in architecture. You stay on the property for a week, learn a lot about architecture, and get unbelievable access to the house. I went through the program when I was 17, and it was AMAZING.

I'm going to have to look into that. I wonder if they do something like that at the Kraus House.

It will be worth every penny (it wasn't very expensive anyways), regardless of whether you go into architecture or not. I've got an architecture degree, I decided to go into teaching instead, but I'm glad I got the archie degree too.

By they way, if you get a 5-year AIA accredited bachelors degree, yes you'll have to intern for 3 years after that, but you do get paid for that. Not very well, but it is paid nonetheless.

Its kind of a coincidence that he is in town right now and I saw him just an hour ago, then I came home and went on Oppo (as usual) and saw this post

It should be. Architects have to have a knowledgebase similar to mechanical engineers, electrical engineers, and designers all rolled into one. And yeah that education plus internship puts a lot of people off I think. Not like you get to say you're a brain surgeon afterwards.

Ya, he's retired now and has a HUMUNGOUS classic car collection (he really likes corvettes) he has a 62 tanker vette, an early 63 split window (just like leno's), a 70 ElCamino, that his wife drives, a period correct hot rodded 57 chevy 150 and many more. He offered to fly me out to LA to stay with him for a week and he'd take me into the peterson vault among other things

I have a strange love of really efficient use of space. It might carry over from all the tiny hatches I love.

Kinja'd!!!

This is one of my favorites. Not for the design necessarily but more for how much they were able to put inside.

I have to agree, space efficiency is something I really like to focus on when I'm designing something on the Sims.

No, I just didnt say yes because I didnt know when I'd be able to do it, Its supposedly an open offer. I was talking with him about his cars today, and I got into specifics about corvettes.... when He mentioned his tanker corvette I said, "you mean a zo6?" and he got the biggest grin (He rarely smiles genuinely) it was the coolest thing

Well, that's definitely a faster way to make money, although you have no idea how fast the next 8 years are going to fly by. Dealership tech is not nearly as creative work either.

You're a prime candidate for that residency at Fallingwater. By the end of that week, you'll either feel it in your bones that you need to follow the creative path ... Or you won't. Follow your gut, you can make a living either way, so go with what feels right.

Yeah, I did a semester of mechanical drawing and didn't like it, but we never did any sort of layouts of houses or anything. Just 2D and 3D objects with a bunch of different techniques. I'd need to something something like that residency to see if I'd really like it.

Kinja'd!!!1

Do it, you have nothing to lose by trying it. Mechanical drawing is VERY different (although I liked it too, heh).

I was planning to skip college and go into construction. My high school architecture teacher put it this way: "Try it out. You can always go into construction later, if you don't like it." Made sense to me. Next thing I knew, I went from never wanting to go to college, to having a Masters degree. Crazy, but I don't regret a thing.

Switch me pounding nails, for you spinning wrenches, and it works the same.

I love modern architecture, and using space to the most efficient possible. One day, I want to buy a small studio apartment and try and use the space as efficiently as possible. I find this pretty cool. http://www.ikeahackers.net/2010/10/turn-y…

Obligatory response.

Also:

ARCHITECTURE-LOPNIK HAS ALWAYS BEEN A THING, YOU JUST DIDN'T KNOW ABOUT IT. FIRST RULE OF ARCHITECTURE-LOPNIK IS YOU DON'T TALK ABOUT ARCHITECTURE-LOPNIK.

That being said (shouted?) there is a pretty great architecture tag over on Gizmodo. They post a lot of articles from Architizer, etc.
