Kinja'd!!!

It's been an incredible journey. I spent three years and 30,000 kilometers with this little gem. I drove it as far as Portland, (from Calgary) raced it on frozen lakes and wooed countless women with it.

I had a misfire diagnosed by a mechanic and it turned out much worse than I feared. My 1989 Swift GTi has a stuck valve on cylinder #3 and the head would need to be machined to fix it. The rust has penetrated both rocker panels, (structural) I live 2,200 miles from it now and it wouldn't pass Ontario smog due to the modifications. It's sadly time to let go.

I wanted it to be my forever car. The previous owner raised his kids in it and naive as it might sound, I wanted to do the same. i got 36/54 mpg with it and loved every minute of it. Parts for the rare G13B engine are pricey and I spent $2,700 maintaining it over the years.

I can still remember driving out past city limits in that car at night with Lazerhawk playing through the two paper dash speakers. It wasn't perfect but she was my car and I loved her. She outlasted all my dating relationships too.

I drove it to cruise nights, whipped it around on gravel roads and raced a million stop light drag races in it. (it wasn't fast but it was fun) I put that little car through a lot and it just kept working mile after mile. it was so good to me.

It doesn't make sense to drop another $4,000 into a $3,000 car with nearly 200k on it. It's time to let go but letting go is still hard. I took this picture a few weeks ago during my visit to my parents house because I knew it would be the last time I ever drove it.

I'll be giving the parts away in the hope that other Swifts can live on. I can't bear to think of it being crushed and going to waste.

I'm buying a new car but it won't be the same. Lily, nothing can ever replace you. I'll always remember.

I'll always remember my old '93 Mercury Tracer. Still the best car I ever owned, sentimentally speaking. It would not die. I treated that thing worse than any rental car ever has been treated. Too many memories to count, including:

A sideswipe crash at 85+ mph(speedo only went to 85, it was pegged), which would have totaled it(and maybe killed someone) if I had been 6 inches further to one side, but zip ties and a couple trips to a few junkyards pieced it back together to 'good nuff' state.

Jumping a curb and hitting mailboxes from overshooting a turn took out the entire exhaust system.

Not a single panel was straight after the night that I lost my wallet and decided to take it out on the car, and the time a dog chased me onto the roof of it and I dented the hell out of the roof.

Most of the interior had cigarette burns and barf stains, some graffiti on the back of the front headrests made my future wife question my faithfulness.

all the while it still chugged along, even though I think in 4 years of ownership, it never had a change of oil or anything.

I sold it to my brother in law, who(seriously, no lie) ended up taking it on a high speed police chase, jumping out of the car while it was in motion, leaving it to crash into a pole and two parked cars(then led police on a foot chase, where he got tazed..). Since it was still in my name(ugg.. damn BIL), I was notified by the police of the whole situation, and after a bunch of BS, was given the choice to pick it up from impound. I checked out the car, and IT STILL RAN, and not only that, it had a piece of the utility pole it hit wedged between the front tire and rim, and the tire STILL HELD AIR.

It was the toughest little bastard I've ever owned, and I am still sad I couldn't save it, because I didn't have enough for the ridiculous impound fees. It later got crushed :( I'll always remember my Mean Green.

Call me sentimental but have some vision....a u-pull special for $99 gets an engine back in there, some steel stock gets the rockers solid, and an address change to outside of the "southern" Ontario belt gets you a sticker without all the smog bullshit.

I've had this idea for a while:

Get a piece of wood large enough to do this job (probably 8"x 10"x 1" would do). Sand, prime, and paint it the color of your car. Use a rattle can of Duplicolor and try to get it as smooth and shiny as your car once was. Strip the nameplate off your car and mount it on the board somewhere on the top half, and mount the shift knob (hopefully it's a manual) on the bottom. You now have a memorial plaque that you can hang on the wall that can also function as a useful coat hanger-thingy.

I have a two (for now)...nothing special a 1992 camry and a 1998 civic DX.

It's about 3 dollars worth of material and less than 20 minutes for me to do. The swivel bottom is a salvage from office chairs that the office throws out when the upper gets destroyed. So it's really just a bit more than 3 ft. of 3/4x3/4 of angle iron and a handful of pop-rivets.

The angle iron is riveted to the bottom portion of the rails and the chair has total functions as when it was in the car and as an office chair. up/down, full tilt from the office chair and cushion control, back/head rest, forward and backward sliding of the car chair.(position your center of gravity over the base)

Only thing missing is armrests but you get used to that.

I pull the seats out of personal cars that I know are going to be crushed. I fear if I go looking for a high-end seat in a junkyard I will open a whole new hobby of replacing my office chair every few months

EDIT:woah big pics.

It shouldn't cost $4000 to fix it. I'm actually doing a head gasket job on a G13BB as we speak. Was a piece of cake to get the head off. But then I discovered one of the exhaust valves is burnt. My options are to replace the one valve and seat, which will probably be about $20 in parts, and finish the head gasket job, which is about $50 in parts; or I can throw $450 at 3tech Performance to build me a new head that includes porting and polishing, stainless steel valves and new seats, and my choice of performance or economy cam.

Either way, it's an affordable and easy job, and you should consider doing it yourself rather than throwing away a perfectly good car.

I bought a Swift GTi new back in the day. $10,000. It was one of the most fun to drive cars I ever owned. Less than 2000 pounds & 100 screaming HP mated to a 5 speed with a 4.11 final drive. The first week I had it, I went stoplight dragging at the local Blvd cruise night. Off the line up to 50mph, I smoked everything from Z28s to 5.0 Mustangs to an old Buick 455. It was just so light, it got the jump on everything.

I had that car for three years. It got totaled when a 14 year old girl driving her parents' stolen minivan ran into me while being chased by the police. The was demolished but I wasn't even scratched. Sad.

also another hiccup with more high-end car seats would be electric motors. While it would be fairly simple to rig up a 12v SLA battery and a small charging unit into the back/bottom of the seat you will still need a cord sometimes...but maybe not...once the seat is in a position you like I doubt it's gonna move around much afterwards.

My first two new cars were Geo Metros after back to back Chevettes. I've always loved little cars and my first chevette and last metro were the best. I would four wheel drift the metro through snowy corners (enter just a bit too fast to start plowing, easy the e-brake to slide out the rear and gas it to pull it throughn fun!) while delivering pizzas. I drove pedal to the metal 90% of the of the time, practicing my race entrances and exit on each corner and no one could tell. It made multiple 800- 1200 mile trips and held 90mph for more than an hour (no one would believe me). You had to anticipate being sucked in slightly when passing the front of a semi... great memories! I'm glad you enjoyed your corporate cousin!

If you've got a car you love, you can't just let go. $4,000 for a car with 200,000 on the clock? That's a small price to pay for a car you love. Some people will drop hundreds of thousands, or even millions on cars that they can't or won't ever even drive. But you've hot another shot at more bliss for comparative pocket change. Do it.

Oooh, the memories! My mom's former DD was a '92 Swift in Tridon (or Trident?) Blue. When we got it, the dealership gave us the option to buy the GM equivalent Metro/Firefly that was already in the lot, but we opted instead to wait a few weeks for a Japanese-built Swift to be shipped to them. I loved this car for the same reasons and learned to drive in it. Unfortunately we replaced the thing after 13 years for a Suzuki Swift+. My parents have had bad experiences with Korean cars (cough..Pontiac LeMans) and swore long ago to never buy them again; so they were kind of shocked when I told them that the car they just bought was a rebadged Daewoo. I still miss the old Swift; it was still running great when we sold it off. I keep thinking some kid has bought it and probably riced the hell out of it.

But look at how clean it is, park it and fix it when your life allows it. Kinda like cryogenically freezing the family pet until science is mad real.

Glad you enjoyed your time with one. They're really special little cars. I can agree about them getting the jump on everything! I used to race diesel trucks with mine because the bro-tards ran big tires and never adjusted their gearing. Used to piss them off haha

The FiST is a great car, but I vowed long ago to only drive older cars. Next ride is (of all things) a $1,700 1969 Chrysler

I've really thought about it but I don't have a place to put it. It's a street parked car which means it needs liability insurance just to sit there :(

I may be feeling this way at some point. My car has rust that needs to be addressed on the left side rocker panel, the outsides of the wheelwells, and the lower core support.

Kinja'd!!!

Rocker panel rust is above. The core support is what I'm most worried about, because that's structural. This looks like it could be blasted off and bondoed/painted.

Start working at home with Google! It's by-far the best job I've had. Last Wednesday I got a brand new BMW since getting a check for $6474 this - 4 weeks past. I began this 8-months ago and immediately was bringing home at least $77 per hour. I work through this link, go to tech tab for work detail

last pay check was $9500 working 12 hours a week online. My neighbour's sister has been averaging 15k for months now and she works about 20 hours a week. I can't believe how easy it was once I tried it out.

This is what I do,,,,,,,,,,

I feel for you fellow Jalop. My first and favorite car to date that I have owned was a 1985 Chevrolet Sprint, not a turbo or GSI like yours but same basic vehicle. I loved that thing more than my dog. It was a sad day when I had to give 'er up.

Daisy, if you can hear this, I hope to re-create you some day.

Nice. And I've always found that armrests on my legit "office" chairs are more of a PITA than they're worth, because if I'm sitting I'm typing or handling paperwork, and at the end of the sit the armrests make it a pain to park the chair properly out of the way.

So... awesome.

You know, I'm thinking about this now and it occurs to me that the two most comfortable long-term upright seats I've ever sat in come from Chrysler AP-bodies (shadow, sundance) and my 2'nd gen Sonoma. The Sonoma's out though, possibly... seat's too long. But the Shadow's cushion isn't too long. I also recall reading 'complaints' in reviews that old Fox platform seating was rather short in the cushion.

Jesus Christ, what a mess. And somehow absolutely incredible that this is still identifiable as a 1964 Pontiac Parisienne Safari. Seriously. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pontiac_S…

Yes, but honestly, the GT/GTi is pretty much a major "sleeper" anyway—nobody can tell the difference.

Go for it, it's really not that difficult to do. It's by-far the most comfortable supportive chair I have sat in day in day out. If there was a pick-and-pull near me I would tempt the idea of making a business out of it. Custom office chairs is a niche and every-guy is a car guy at heart.

In case you needed more of an incentive, the mounting rails make an awesome bottle opener spot.

The Swift GTi was, oddly, one of my dream cars growing up. They're just the coolest little cars. So fun. So, ahem, swift. Sad to see it go, but glad you had such good times in her. They don't make cars like her anymore.

Go on something like http://specialstage.com and post it in their For Sale forum. Someone there will buy it, fix it, and rally it, which is as it's meant to be.

So sorry to hear about this. I'm still mostly reeling from the loss of my old Honda del Sol, you don't realize how much your car is a part of your life until it's gone. RIP Lily, it sounds like you were not just loved but adored. Not many cars can say that anymore.
