Felipe Massa will start the Austrian Grand Prix from pole position after Williams took a shock one-two in qualifying.
Valtteri Bottas was on provisional pole after the first runs as Nico Rosberg failed to put together a good lap and Lewis Hamilton – who was flying – ran wide at Turn 8 and saw his time deleted. On the second runs Bottas was unable to improve but Hamilton spun under braking Turn 2, preventing Rosberg from improving and allowing Massa a clear run.
Massa took full advantage to beat his team-mate by less than 0.1s and take his first pole position since 2008, also ending the Mercedes run of dominance in qualifying. Rosberg will start third and take heart from the fact that Hamilton didn't set a time and will start from ninth place.Between Rosberg and Hamilton are Fernando Alonso who starts fourth ahead of Daniel Ricciardo and Kevin Magnussen on row three, and Daniil Kvyat and Kimi Raikkonen who are seventh and eighth respectively. Nico Hulkenberg also failed to set a time and will line up tenth.
Due to the short lap time, the times were close in Q2 with less than a second covering the top 14 cars. Vettel was the headline driver to drop out as he could only set the 13th quickest time, though he will be promoted to 12th on the grid as a result of Sergio Perez – who qualified 11th – still having a five-place grid penalty hanging over him following the crash with Massa in Canada.
Jenson Button was the driver between Perez and Vettel as he was 0.3s slower than team-mate Magnussen having completed just four laps in FP3 due to a brake issue. The two Lotus cars also dropped out in the second part of qualifying and were split by Jean-Eric Vergne who was comfortably beaten by Kvyat at Toro Rosso.
Q1 saw a number of times being deleted as drivers ran wide at Turn 8, leading to a situation where Adrian Sutil had got himself out of the bottom six only to lose his time. Sutil managed to improve on his final lap but missed out on a place in the second part of qualifying by just 0.004s to Pastor Maldonado, while Vettel scraped through in 15th.
Esteban Gutierrez joined his Sauber team-mate in being eliminated in the opening part of qualifying, with Gutierrez just 0.063s quicker than Jules Bianchi's Marussia. Kamui Kobayashi, Max Chilton and Marcus Ericsson were the other cars to drop out, with Chilton set to start last as a result of a three-place grid penalty for hitting his team-mate Bianchi at the start of the Canadian Grand Prix.
