Jeep Grand Cherokee Overland EcoDiesel or Mercedes ML350 BlueTEC?

Two vehicles that are most likely cross-shopped in the luxury SUV segment. They also share a bit of platform between the two. There is a bit of a price gap though.

Both have 3.0L Diesel engines, black paint, tan interior, 20 inch wheels, AWD/4WD, and infotainment system with navigation and HDD.

Jeep Grand Cherokee Overland EcoDiesel: $52,930

Mercedes-Benz ML350 BlueTEC: $59,005

Of the two, I'd pick the Jeep. It's interior is a little more modern and the exterior looks a bit nicer. It has more off-road ability than the Benz. I really do think this is a case of paying for the badge, because the Jeep is wonderfully made and uses very nice materials. The engine makes just as much power and only a little less torque. The Benz just really isn't worth the extra coin in this case.

Which one would you guys and girls pick?

I'd take the Benz due to it's crash test scores, vs the jeep.

The jeep got marginal, while the Mercedes scored good.

I'd take the Mercedes. The interior looks a little more upscale, and the vehicle itself is presumably a little more refined.

we just bought a Durango and love it. The interior is great. We have the gas V6. Mileage is 17 or so in town and up to 23 on the interstate.

I have heard... All hearsay that the diesel is basically hemi towing with V6 thirst. Just driving it empty, the cost may not make up for the better efficiency. If you drive a LOT!- it may worth it. If you do the normal 13000 per year, the V6 may be cheaper in the long run.

I actually thought the interior looks a little less upscale over the Jeep. It looks old to me for some reason or another. Especially compared to newer Benz interiors. Mind you, I don't know how long this generation of ML has been out.

As for refinement, from what I've read online the Jeep is actually a really refined.

If you're going to mallcrawl, might as well do it right! I would take the Benz. Having sat in both vehicles, I can say that the interior quality of the GC isn't as great as you think. The Benz definitely has a more comfortable ride/luxurious feel.

Realistically, I wouldn't buy either if I had the money. The resale value on both of these are terrible, especially the Benz. And I believe reliability on both are not that great either. But, if I had to lease one, I would pick the Benz.

Considering how much the last generation of GC diesels are going for, I think I'd go for the Grand Cherokee.

I love the Jeep so much... Paint it cream and I'm sold!

But if I were to cross-shop it with the Benz (which I probably wouldn't) I would probably go home in the Merc honestly....

Benz of course. Much higher quality everything. I've played with both first hand. I'm not a huge fan of the ML styling, but I don't think it's unattractive. More refined in pretty much every way. Classier in every way. Safer in every way. Benz disks last forever and have excellent resale value in my area, last generation 5 years old approaching 100k still going for 25k easy.

I love the Jeep. It is really one of the best looking SUVs out there! But I really like the pre facelift exterior better. The interior isn't Merc quality. And I like the Mercs exterior better. Being around these a lot I can say, I would definitely pick the Merc. It has a prestige badge for mall crawling. Very important. Now, if it was Jeep Grand Cherokee against Dodge Durango and Chevy Tahoe, I would much rather have the jeep between those three.

This is true. I have worked for other brands though and never felt nearly as biased towards them. I will admit though that the vehicles Mercedes has built in Alabama have been a bit sub-par as far build quality goes. My love/hate relationship with Land Rover has instilled a sense of rivalry towards jeep, so that doesn't help.

This one really comes down to personal taste, if money doesn't matter its Daimler for me, if it is hello Mr. Grand Cherokee.
